Mustangs Fall 3-2 In Overtime At Memphis
Oct 9

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (SMU) – No. 10 SMU dropped its second match of the season on Saturday night by a final score of 3-2 as Memphis scored the game-winner on a penalty kick in overtime.

The Mustangs (6-2-2, 3-2-0 AAC) fell behind in the first half as the Tigers (4-6-1, 3-2-0) took a 1-0 lead when Maximillian Galizzi scored in the 27th minute of the match.

SMU tied the contest at 1-1 during the 37th when Harvey Castro met the ball at the corner after the Memphis defense worked to clear a Mustang pass. Castro crossed the ball into the box, where Tobin Shanks sent it soaring over the keeper off his head for his first goal of the season.

The two headed into the break knotted at one apiece and came out fighting for the tiebreaker, but neither team was able to put another goal in the back of the net until near the end of regulation.

In the 87th minute, Mustang freshman Bailey Sparks put SMU ahead 2-1 as he found a pass from Skage Simonsen then took a shot from the top of the box that slid into the bottom right-hand corner of the goal.

Just 26 seconds later, the Tigers tied the contest back up, this time at 2-2, as Gazilli scored his second of the night.

SMU headed into its fourth overtime match of the season and found one close opportunity before Memphis got theirs. The 99th minute saw a card issued in the Mustang box, allowing Tigers' Artur De Luca a chance on a penalty kick. After catching Cole Johnson off guard by hesitating on his kick, De Luca converted the opportunity to claim the 3-2 win.

The Mustangs are back at home on Saturday, Oct. 16 as they host UCF. Action at Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium is set for a 7 p.m. start on ESPN+.
