SMU Volleyball Falls 3-2 To Wichita State

DALLAS, Texas (SMU) – SMU fell to Wichita State in five sets (22-25, 25-16, 25-20, 22-25, 15-8) on Sunday afternoon. Jamison Wheeler led the Mustangs with a personal-best 16 kills on 36 attacks. Brylee Kelly was tough for Wichita State (9-6, 3-3 AAC) as she had a game-high 29 kills, while Natalie Foster added 17 more. The Shockers had 26 block assists and hit. 301 in the match.

SMU (7-9, 3-3 AAC) was down 8-6 in the opening set. The Mustangs then turned in a 6-0 scoring run to take the lead back. After the set was knotted at 15 apiece, SMU found some rhythm to go ahead 18-16. SMU held on to this lead and took the opening set. Wheeler led the Mustangs with six kills in the first set. The Shockers later evened up the match in set two.

WSU led 7-6 in the third set as both teams traded points. The Shockers jumped out in front 16-9. The Mustangs were able to cut the lead down to four, but could not overcome the large deficit.

The Mustangs went up 12-9 after a kill from Makayla Miller in the fourth set. With a 17-16 lead, SMU hit a 4-0 scoring run to find a comfortable lead which ended up being enough to force a fifth set.

The Shockers hit .429 with 10 kills in the fifth set. WSU found an early 8-3 lead and held on to take the conference win.

Rachel Woulfe and Hannah Jacobs both notched 11 kills in the match. Three Mustangs hit double-digits in digs as Bria' Merchant led the trio with 16. Lily Heim dished out 36 assists for SMU.

Lily Liekweg dug up 20 balls for WSU, while Kayce Litzau gathered 61 assists.
