No. 15 SMU Wins 2-0 At [RV] USF Sunday

TAMPA, Fla. (SMU) – No. 15 SMU defeated USF, 2-0, on a pair of goals by Lindsey Whitmore at Corbett Stadium in Tampa, Fla., Sunday afternoon.

For the Bulls, it was the first conference loss of the season as they dropped to 8-3-2 overall, 3-1-1 in the American Athletic Conference. SMU improved to 8-2-1 overall, 2-1-1 in The American.

Whitmore put the Mustangs in front just 3:05 into the game. The transfer headed in an attempted clearance by the Bulls, finding the bottom right corner.

"I think the early goal gave us some confidence and gave us something more to play for," SMU head coach Chris Petrucelli explained after the win. "We felt like we had something and didn't want to give it away."

In the 63rd minute, Whitmore again took advantage of a mistake by the Bulls defense for her second goal of the contest. USF goalkeeper Sydney Martinez mishandled the ball, and Whitmore took it away for an empty-net goal.

"She (Whitmore) is incredibly fast. She puts a ton of pressure on their defense when they have the ball. That's where the goals came from today," stated Petrucelli. "She turned them (USF) over twice and scored, both on great individual efforts."

With the two goals, Whitmore now has four on the season, tied with Courtney Sebazco for the team lead.

The Mustangs were under heavy offensive pressure from the Bulls throughout the contest, but Tatum Sutherland was up to the challenge, making eight saves on 14 shots by USF.

"It's come to be expected from Tatum that she's going to make great saves because she's done it in every game. She did it again today," Petrucelli exclaimed.

This is just the second win for SMU against USF in a series that started in 2013, with both wins coming in Tampa. It is the first win since 2016.

The Mustangs play at Cincinnati Sunday at 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT.
