Volleyball wins in five sets at Tulane

NEW ORLEANS, La. – SMU took down Tulane in five sets (15-25, 25-19, 25-18, 23-25, 15-11) on Sunday afternoon to finish out a 2-0 road conference weekend. The Mustangs were led by Rachel Woulfe who tied her career-high with 22 kills on the day. Hannah Jacobs and Alex Glover also combined for 24 kills. Bria’ Merchant was solid at the libero position digging up 29 balls to lead the Mustangs. Zairyn Hemsley made her second start on the season dishing out a personal-best 51 assists along with 17 digs at the SMU setter.

Tulane (12-8, 5-3 AAC) took the opening set, but SMU (9-9, 5-3 AAC) came out fired up in the second. The Mustangs went up 13-7 after Woulfe notched three-straight kills. The Mustangs never let Tulane get within four points as Woulfe finished with nine kills in this set.

The Green Wave found a 10-8 lead in the third set. A 7-1 scoring run for SMU pushed the Mustangs back out in front 15-11. Woulfe continued her big day by adding six more kills in this set to give SMU a 2-1 match lead. The Mustangs hit .444 and limited themselves to just one attack error along the way.

In the fourth set, Tulane finally found some rhythm at the midway point (15-10). SMU fought back to get back within one point (24-23) after timely kills by Jadyn Bauss and Jacobs. Kayla Dinkins helped Tulane secure set point with her kill from the left side.

The Mustangs stormed out to a 10-5 advantage. The Green Wave did get within two points (13-11), but SMU held tough to grab two straight points along the way to the road victory.

SMU is now 3-1 in five-set matches on the season.

Lexie Douglas led Tulane with 20 kills while Mackenzie Martin accounted for 39 digs.
