Chakravarthi And Steinhausen Win Titles In Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (SMU) – Caleb Chakravarthi won the singles title and partnered with Julian Steinhausen to claim the double championship at the Islander Open this weekend.

Chakravarthi gutted out tiebreaker wins in his quarterfinal and semifinal matches to reach the championship. In the final, he won in straight sets against Mathieu Peres from the host A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 6-2, 6-3.

"I'm proud of the team for all the progress we have made," said Chakravarthi after the awards ceremony. "We have been working hard and been so focused. I had a good game plan with the coaches, and was able to execute our strategy. So happy with the wins."

In doubles, Chakravarthi and Steinhausen pulled out a dramatic 7-6 (6) victory after going to a tiebreaker in the final against Solano Caffarena and Ricardo Alban from UTA.

Callaway Clark and Eli Susser finished fourth in doubles. The duo split their first two matches to reach the third-place match against Nick Beamish and Anton Shepp from UTA. The matchup when to a tiebreaker before the Mustang pair fell 7-6 (6).

"This was an ultra-physical and mental test as the conditions were extremely humid," said head coach Grant Chen. "A&M-Corpus Christi did a great job hosting the tournament as everyone got so many matches. Caleb found a way to win the singles tournament by being mentally stronger and more physical. Proud of him as he has worked so hard the past few months, and was also build off a strong tournament last week at the ITA regionals. Caleb and Julian were a combination we wanted to try out, and it was positive to see the results. Callaway and Eli improved all weekend and played their best matches on the final day."
