No. 16 SMU Defeats Tulsa 2-0 Sunday

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's soccer team defeated Tulsa, 2-0, at the Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium Sunday afternoon. The victory was the 10th of the season for the Mustangs (10-2-2, 4-1-2 American Athletic Conference) and the ninth shutout.

"We scored a couple of good goals, and I think we kind of had control of it," head coach Chris Petrucelli explained. "Tulsa fought really hard. This is sort of a professional kind of win."

SMU got its first goal in the 19th minute off the foot of Alina Khan, who scored for the second time in as many matches. Mackenzie Rudden passed the ball to Lindsey Whitmore on the left wing. The senior dribbled into the box before sending a cross toward Khan. Khan flicked it off the right post and into the back of the net.

Seven minutes later, Rudden headed home a corner kick served into the box by Courtney Sebazco. The goal was Rudden's second of the season as well.

"It's interesting, those guys score goals in practice all the time. They are goal scorers. They just haven't had that many opportunities with the depth we have," said Petrucelli. "It's great to see them showcasing their talents."

Samantha Estrada was in goal and posted her second straight clean sheet. Estrada made four saves, all in the first half. The SMU defense did not allow a Tulsa shot on goal in the second half.

"She [Estrada] was clean. They had a couple of shots, and she didn't make any great saves, but she made all of the ones she should've made," stated Petrucelli.
Tulsa (6-8-2, 1-5-1 The American) took just seven shots to SMU's 15, which included 10 on goal.

The Mustangs finish the regular season Thursday night at Memphis at 7 p.m.

"They're [Memphis] a good team. They're a really, really good team. They've got a lot of good players, and traditionally, they have been one of the best teams in the league," Petrucelli said. "It's exciting though. We get to go play in a game that really matters. That's what you want at this time of the year."
