SMU Volleyball Takes Down USF 3-1 On Sunday

DALLAS, Texas (SMU) – SMU took down South Florida in four sets (25-16, 25-19, 23-25, 25-16) on Sunday afternoon inside Moody Coliseum. Three Mustangs notched 12 kills on the day (Hannah Jacobs, Kaylyn Winkler, and Alex Glover). The Mustangs hit .336 and came away with 22 block assists along with six service aces to take down the Bulls. Jadyn Bauss set a new career-high with four block assists, while also adding 22 digs for the Mustangs. Bria' Merchant continued to be tough on the back line as she accumulated 17 digs. Zairyn Hemsley turned in another double-double with 41 assists and 16 digs at the setter position.

After a 3-3 tie in the first set, SMU found a 3-0 run capped off by a kill from Alex Glover. USF got back within a point (8-7) before SMU scored six straight points. Zairyn Hemsley had two service aces and Hannah Jacobs added three kills on this long rally. SMU late in the set had another long scoring run to put away the Bulls in the opening set. Jacobs accumulated six kills in the first frame.

SMU used a 4-0 scoring run to extend its lead to 10-5 in the second set. USF fought back to get within two points (11-9). The Bulls did not let up down the stretch forcing SMU to fight until the end. The Mustangs added three more service aces and four blocks to grab the 2-0 lead.

SMU held a 10-8 lead in the third set. The Bulls then turned in a rally to retake the lead and extend it to 19-12. USF found set point, but the Mustangs rolled off three straight points to cut into the lead, but Marta Cvitkovic gave the Bulls a set win with her kill.

Both teams were knotted at 10 points apiece in the fourth set. SMU then took control of the match with a 9-0 scoring run led by a balanced attack. SMU held USF to a .028 hitting percentage in the final set to grab the home conference victory.

Cvitkovic led USF with 15 kills. Three Bulls gathered double-digit digs. CC Clausen led the trio with a game-high 35. USF added 10 block assists and four service errors on the afternoon.

SMU continues its four-game home stand as the Mustangs host Cincinnati on Friday, October 29. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
