SMU Holds No. 8 Tulsa To Scoreless Draw On Wednesday Night

DALLAS (SMU) - SMU earned its fifth shutout of the season as they held No. 8 Tulsa to a 0-0 draw at Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium on Wednesday night thanks to an impressive performance by keeper Cole Johnson and the Mustang defense.

The Mustangs (7-3-3, 4-3-1 AAC) saw their fourth double overtime period of the season and second against the Golden Hurricane (11-1-1, 6-1-1) after the two played to the 110th minute back in September.

"All the work we've done from the summer all the way through the season, we put all of it into those 110 minutes, so you gotta give props to our guys," Johnson said. "I'm really proud of them."

The first 90 minutes saw an even match as SMU out-shot Tulsa by a margin of 16-11. The home team's offensive efforts were led by Gabriel Costa, who tallied five of the night's shots, and were helped by Knut Ahlander and Bailey Sparks, who recorded three apiece. Costa and Ahlander both put one shot on goal as they each found a chance during the first and second halves, respectively.

The Golden Hurricane led 6-2 in shots over the Mustangs during the two overtime periods while putting two on goal. Neither team was able to finish a shot, though, as the match ended in a nil-nil draw.

In goal, Johnson put up a seven-save performance on the night as he kept Tulsa off the board and finished with the sixth clean sheet of his career. Two of the seven saves came during overtime as the sophomore prevented the Golden Hurricane from finding a golden goal.

"The past few games haven't really gone our way, so we're just trying to get back on our feet and create the chances that we deserve and do good things in the conference tournament," Johnson said. "

Next up, SMU travels to Orlando, Florida for its final road trip of the regular season. The Mustangs take on UCF on Sunday, Oct. 31 at 5 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
