SMU Downs UCF In Dominant 5-0 Victory

ORLANDO, Fla. (SMU) – Led by a hat trick from senior Skage Simonsen, SMU earned a 5-0 win over RV UCF on Sunday night as they used all their tricks to get some treats at the UCF Soccer and Track Complex.

The Mustangs (8-3-3, 5-3-1) dominated in their second matchup of the season against the Knights (8-6-0, 6-3-0 AAC) after dropping the first earlier this month in Dallas.

Simonsen broke open the night's scoring after putting his first in the back of the net during the 23rd minute. The forward put a second head on the ball after freshman defender Mads Westergren made the first for the assist.

The second goal of the first half came from Wyatt Priest, when he connected with Knut Ahlander's rebounded shot in the 37th minute. The score gave the Mustangs a 2-0 advantage heading into halftime.

Coming out of the break, SMU kept the momentum up with the first of three second-half goals passing the UCF keeper in the 55th. Senior Gabriel Costa tallied his eighth goal of the season when he converted a free kick taken from just outside the top of the 18-yard box.

Simonsen put two more on the board to complete the second hat trick of his career as he scored during the 60th and 84th minutes. His second goal came after settling a cross from Harvey Castro and rocketing the ball into the net. The Norwegian played the rest of his cards for the third as he maneuvered around four UCF defenders to slide a shot past the keeper.

Mustang keeper Cole Johnson recorded one save for his second straight clean sheet as SMU's defense held the Knights to just one shot on goal and seven overall.

The win clinches a spot for SMU in the American Athletic Conference tournament, which sees the league's top-four teams compete for the title.

The Mustangs close out their regular-season slate on Friday, Nov. 5 when they host Memphis for Senior Night. Action at Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium is slated for a 7 p.m. CT start and will be streamed on ESPN+.
