Mustangs Drop Final Regular Season Contest To Memphis

DALLAS (SMU) – SMU fell to Memphis in their final regular season match by a final score of 4-1 on Friday night at Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium.

The Mustangs (8-4-3, 5-4-1 AAC) pushed throughout the night offensively as they out-shot the Tigers (6-8-2, 5-4-1 AAC) 24-14 and recorded seven shots on goal.

SMU senior Skage Simonsen led off the night's scoring early on as he netted his fourth goal of the season in just the second minute. Simonsen settled a throw-in from classmate Lane Warrington before making the shot above his head that flew past the Memphis keeper.

Memphis responded quickly as Peter Chang knotted the contest at one in the fifth. Maximillian Galizzi tacked two more on for the Tigers throughout the first half as he scored in the 19th minute thanks to an assist from Chang then again in the 23rd off helpers from Ford Hunt and Emanuel Santos.

SMU's Bailey Sparks and Gabriel Costa both saw close chances in the first 45 minutes, but weren't able to capitalize as their shots barely missed the goal to the left.

Senior Knut Ahlander, who took three shots on frame during the match, found a chance in the 52nd minute on a shot that went wide on the right side.

The Tigers added a fourth goal in the 65th when Jovan Prado scored on an assist from Gabriel Christensen then held the Mustangs off for the 4-1 victory.

Mustang keeper Cole Johnson totaled four saves on the night as he faced 14 total shots.

With the result, SMU finishes fourth in the league and will face host and No. 1 seed Tulsa in the first round of The American tournament. The semifinal round will take place at Hurricane Stadium on Wednesday, Nov. 10 at approximately 7 p.m. CT. The full bracket can be found here.
