Volleyball beats Houston on Senior Day

DALLAS, Texas (SMU) – SMU defeated Houston in four sets (27-25, 25-17, 17-25, 25-23) on Senior Day. The Mustangs were led by Hannah Jacobs and Rachel Woulfe who combined for 24 kills. Bria' Merchant, who was recognized after the match for Senior Day, led SMU with 26 digs. Defensively, SMU was tough as four other Mustangs gathered double-digit digs.

SMU (16-12, 12-6 AAC) started the day off strong with an 8-3 lead. Houston (24-6, 14-4), out of the timeout, used a 5-0 run to tie the set up at eight. SMU retook the lead (12-10) after a key kill by Kaylyn Winkler. SMU was never able to expand its lead to more than two, as UH tied the set up once again at 15. Two more ties down the stretch saw both teams looking four points away from taking the first set (21-21). An attack error by the Cougars put SMU in the lead 23-21 and forced a timeout by UH. The Cougars took the lead (24-23) after an ace. SMU was able to hold off set point and eventually knot the set up at 25. Jamison Wheeler finished off the Cougars in the opening set with consecutive kills.

In the second set both teams battled back-and-forth until SMU found some rhythm to take a 14-9 advantage. The Mustangs held onto this lead after Jacobs added six kills in this set to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

After dropping the third set, SMU fell behind 13-6 in the fourth set. But the Mustangs dug deep and used an 8-3 scoring run to get back into the match (16-14). Annie Cooke and Kennedy Warren pushed the UH lead to four points with back-to-back kills. Glover found her stride hitting timely kills and helped SMU come all the way back from this large deficit to tie the set up at 19-19. Wheeler grabbed the service ace to help SMU take a late advantage (23-22). Rachel Woulfe later secured the match with a big swing and kill.

Alex Glover and Jadyn Bauss both added nine kills each on the day. Zairyn Hemsley notched another double-double on the season with 21 assists and 10 digs, while Lily Heim added 24 assists at the setter position.

With today's victory, head coach Lisa Seifert is now tied with former women's basketball coach Rhonda Rompola for first all-time with 439 wins at SMU.
