Women's swimming takes lead on Day 2 of AAC Championship

Mustangs Win Four Championships, Take Lead On Night Two

DALLAS (SMU) – SMU posted three individual and one relay championship to take over the lead on night two of the American Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. The four-day event is being held at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium on SMU's campus.

Gabi Grobler, Johanna Gudmundsdottir and Nicole Stambo all picked up individual event wins, while SMU won the 200-yard freestyle relay to end the night.

SMU's 364 points sit ahead of Houston (353.5), Tulane (211), Cincinnati (182) and ECU (99.5).

Grobler won her first career conference championship by taking the 200-yard individual medley in an NCAA B cut time of 1:58.33. The senior clocked a 1:58.04 to come into finals as the top seed, a career best time that places her third on SMU's all-time top performer list. The 200 IM win was the third for the Mustangs in The American.

Jenna Watson made a Championship Final appearance in the 200 IM after a Consols appearance as a freshman last season. After a career performance in the prelims (2:01.86), Watson finished fourth in a time of 2:02.09. Janelle Gursoy rounded out Mustangs in the A Final with her best AAC finish in the event at sixth, covering the distance in 2:02.53.

SMU's second championship of the night came from Johanna Gudmundsdottir in the 50-yard freestyle. The sophomore became the third Mustang (4th overall championship) to win the AAC event after posting her first career NCAA B cut with a personal-best mark of 22.74 for the win.

Three more Mustangs scored in the Championship Final with Indra Vandenbussche (4th, 23.10), Alex Stevens (5th, 23.30) and Tiffanie Ruan (7th, 23.43) finishing in order. Valentina Becerra represented SMU in the Consolation Final, turning in a career-best 23.36 for a 10th place finish overall. The finish was her best in The American in the event.

In diving action, Stambo made it back-to-back conference championships on 1 meter with her NCAA Zone qualifying 297.85. Jaclynn Fowler, Johanna Holloway and Hannah Craley also picked up A Final points, finishing sixth through eighth, respectively. With today's performances, all four Mustangs are now qualified for the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships. It was SMU's third 1 meter championship in the AAC.

The Mustangs closed the evening out with a 1:30.32 to win the 200-yard freestyle relay. Gudmundsdottir, Grobler, Vandenbussche and Stevens combined for the season-best time and SMU's fifth AAC championship in the 200 free relay.

Ilektra Lebl and Frederica Kizek posted their highest career conference finishes in the 500-yard freestyle, leading the Mustangs to a two-three finish. Lebl covered the distance in 4:48.60 for runner-up honors, while Kizek came in at 4:49.39. In the event's Consolation Final, Olivia Grossklaus (4:54.21) turned in a 10th-place finish overall and Annabelle Corcoran (4:57.78) was 14th.

Action resumes Friday at 10 a.m. CT on ESPN+ with the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 400 medley relay on the schedule.

Thanks. The fact our Women are more competitive at AAC championships is encouraging. Hopefully, we can hold 1st place, but this is a very close competition.
