Nine Mustangs Claim ECAC Postseason Awards

DANBURY, Conn. (SMU) – The SMU equestrian team was well represented in the Eastern College Athletic Conference's list of annual postseason accolades, which the league released on Wednesday evening, March 23rd.

Sophomore Nya Kearns earned the ECAC Horsemanship Rider of the Year recognition, and Sophomore Taylor Madden earned the ECAC Flat Rider of the Year recognition, respectively, both claiming the award for the second consecutive year. The ECAC 2022 Rider of the Year awards are based on the competitor's ECAC record for the year. Jumping Seat newcomer Hensley Humphries was named ECAC Freshman of the Year.

Kearns completed the NCEA regular season competition with a 10-1-2 record, four Most Outstanding Performer (MOP) awards, and five consecutive wins.

Madden completed the NCEA regular season competition with a 10-1-1 sophomore campaign in the Flat and has not lost in the Flat since SMU hosted No. 2 Georgia on Oct. 30.

Humphries completed her first NCEA season with the Mustangs 5-1 in the Flat, tallying two MOP awards against both TCU and Sweet Briar.

Madden and Kearns were both selected for the All-ECAC Flat and Horsemanship teams as well for the second consecutive year.

Junior Emma Jolly was named to the ECAC All-Conference Fences team for the first time in her Mustang career. Jolly ended the NCEA season with a 7-6 record and two MOPs.

Kearns, along with seniors Megan Waldron and Mallory Vroegh, were selected for the ECAC All-Conference Horsemanship team. Vroegh, who owns the program's most career wins since SMU added western as a discipline in 2013, capped her Mustang career with an NCEA Regular Season 11-2 record and three MOP awards on the year.

Waldron completed the 2021-22 NCEA regular season with a 6-6 record which included four consecutive wins.

Sophomore Chalyce Head was named to the ECAC All-Conference Reining team after amassing six season wins and MOP recognition in the Mustangs 16-2 win over Delaware State on Jan. 29.

The Mustangs, the top seed in this year's ECAC Conference Tournament, will face the winner of the 4/5 quarterfinal matchup between UC Davis and South Dakota State in the semifinal round on Friday beginning at 9 a.m. The match, along with the entirety of the tournament, will be streamed via YouTube Live, with live scoring also available.
