AAC Champions: Mustangs Claim Team Title; Petronzio Named Individual Champion

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. (SMU) – The SMU men's golf team secured its second American Athletic Conference title and 10th title in program history, setting a 54-hole tournament scoring record of 835 (282-277-276, -29) at the Southern Hills Golf Club on Sunday.

SMU's record scoring effort overtook the previous benchmark set by South Florida (837, -27) at the Black Diamond Ranch Quarry Course in 2015. The Mustangs also staked claim to being the first American squad with multiple rounds sub-280 on a par-72 layout in championship history.

Sophomore Nathan Petronzio earned his first career medalist honors, holding the first-place spot throughout the three-day event and ending the tournament as the only participant of the 45-player field to score in the 60s each day.

A 13-under, 203 finish for Petronzio tied the fifth-lowest 54-hole tournament score in program history, a mark set by Will Dodson in the 2006 C-USA Men's Championship and tied by Frank Wrenn at the John Burns Intercollegiate in 2007.

Petronzio, holding a one-stroke lead against the field to open the final day, survived a third-round surge by South Florida's Run Youprayong, whose five-under 67 brought him within one stroke of Petronzio entering the 18th hole, where both Petronzio and Youprayong hit even-par, securing both team and individual titles for SMU.

Petronzio's 20 birdies through 54 holes was the highest of the field, four more than second-place teammate Noah Goodwin. The sophomore posted a tournament-low five-under at par fours (3.83 avg.) and the second-lowest on par fives (-8, 4.33).

All five Mustangs in the lineup closed the final round below par and in the top-22 of the individual standings.

Goodwin closed his conference championship bid in fourth place at nine-under. The senior carded a four-under, 68 on the final day, hitting six birdies and a clean sheet through the front nine for the second time in the tournament. Goodwin posted the second-lowest performance on par fours against the field (-3, 3.90) and third-lowest on par fives (-7, 4.42).

Sophomore Holden Wisener, after going plus-two on day one, went three-under in rounds two and three to tie his career low round and finish at four under and tied for eleventh. Wisener's six-under at par fives was the fourth-lowest of the field (-6, 4.50 avg.). Through the final round, Wisener carded an unblemished one-under through the front nine and four birdies after the turn, including three birdies on consecutive holes (14-16).

Ollie Osborne closed day three at two-under, good for a T-14th-place finish. Osborne notched four birdies through the final round and hit a clean sheet at one-under through the back nine. Osborne's two-under at par threes (2.83 avg.) was the second-lowest of the field, and the juniors 39 pars through the 54-hole tournament was the second most.

As a team, SMU posted the low score on par threes (E, 3.00 avg.), par fours (-1 3.99 avg.), and par fives (-25, 4.58 avg.). 64 team birdies was the highest figure of the tournament, ten higher than second-place South Florida.
