Rowing Grabs Top-15 Victories at Longhorn Invitational

Mustangs defeat No. 10 Ohio State and No. 14 Virginia in second varsity eight; first eight beats UVA by five seconds

AUSTIN, Texas – No. 16 SMU rowing completed the regular season Saturday with a strong showing at the Longhorn Invitational, facing off with No. 1 Texas, No. 10 Ohio State, No. 14 Virginia and (RV) UCLA. The Mustangs came away with three finishes ahead of UVA while also besting the Buckeyes in the second varsity eight.

Originally scheduled as a two-session event with heats and progression to finals, forecasted high winds forced a compression to one session with straight finals for each event.

SMU took second place in the second varsity eight behind the top ranked Longhorns, finishing 1.2 seconds ahead of the Buckeyes and five seconds ahead of UVA. In the first eight, the Mustangs finished third, just .08 second behind Ohio State.

The second varsity four collected another third-place finish behind Texas and Ohio State, defeating Virginia by over 10 seconds. The varsity four and third varsity eight both finished fourth, defeating UCLA and Texas C, respectively.

The Mustangs now set their sights on the 2022 American Athletic Conference Championship where they will defend their title in Oak Ridge, Tenn. on May 15.
