Rowing Places 12th at NCAA Championships

SARASOTA, Fla. — SMU rowing finished 12th out of 22 teams at the 2022 NCAA Championships, led by a 10th place finish by the second varsity eight which took fourth in the petite final. The first varsity eight finished 11th while the varsity four took 13th place, tallying 72 team points for the Mustangs.

The varsity four began the day with a two-second victory in the C final to finish 13th overall. After Duke jumped out to an early lead in the first 500, the Mustangs moved back up to a one-length lead on the field and held off a late Syracuse sprint to take first place. Open water margins followed to Duke, Oregon State, Penn and Gonzaga.

In the petite final for the second varsity eight, SMU needed every stroke as they ran down Penn in the final 750 meters, taking fourth place from the Quakers on the line by .008 and earning the Mustangs' highest finish of the day - 10th overall.

In the final race of the day, the first varsity eight took fifth place (11th overall), less than a second behind fourth-place Michigan and open water ahead of Virginia.

The Mustangs finished tied with Penn for 12th overall in the team standings, with Penn earning the tiebreaker with their higher finish in the first varsity eight.

Compared to SMU's 2021 results, the first varsity eight and varsity four both improved their overall finishes by two spots while the team's 72-point total is an all-time American Athletic Conference best at the NCAA Championships.
