Women’s Tennis Names Blair Shankle To Coaching Staff
DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's tennis team named Dallas native Blair Shankle as assistant coach, the program announced on Thursday.

Shankle arrives on the Hilltop following a two-season stint at Utah, where she helped lead the Utes in 2021-22 to a program-best 9-0 start, their first Pac 12 Conference Tournament win since 2017 and Utah's first win against USC in program history (ranked 21st nationally), earning Shankle Pac 12 Mountain Region Coach of the Year honors.

Shankle was instrumental in bringing in Utah's ninth-ranked 2022 recruiting class, according to tennisrecruiting.net – Utah's first-ever top-10 class and the highest ranked in program history.

Prior to her Utah stint, Shankle served two seasons as an assistant coach for the Ole Miss program.

In her second season at Ole Miss, Shankle assisted the team in achieving a program-high ranking of No. 24 in the ITA/Oracle team rankings. The Rebels had two singles players ranked in 2020, as well as two doubles pairings. Sabina Machalova ranked as high as No. 47, while her and partner Alexa Bortles ranked as high as No. 17 in doubles.

Fall of 2019, Shankle helped guide Ole Miss pair Tereza Janatova/Anna Vrbenska to a semifinal appearance in the main draw of the ITA Southern Regional Championship, and saw a pair of Rebels earn a spot in the quarterfinal main draw of singles.

In her inaugural season with the Rebels, Shankle's presence had an immediate impact on player development for the Rebel program. Senior Tea Jandric was named ITA Southern Region's Most Improved Senior and earned All-SEC Second Team recognition. Jandric went 8-1 in league play, including four ranked wins.

Three-time All-American Shankle compiled a decorated collegiate career at Baylor, finishing ranked third all-time in doubles wins (99), tied for fourth in singles winning percentage (.826), sixth in singles wins (109) and seventh in doubles winning percentage (.733). Shankle achieved a high ranking of No. 3 in the ITA/Oracle singles poll, setting a new benchmark for the Baylor program in the national rankings. Shankle closed her senior year with singles All-American honors, and a No. 5 seeding in the NCAAs where she advanced to the round of 16.

During her Baylor career, Shankle was included on rosters that garnered four-consecutive NCAA appearances, including an Elite Eight showing in 2015, and both Big 12 regular season and tournament championships in two of her four seasons.

Shankle joins an SMU team which finished its 2021-22 season with a 15-9 record and a run to the American Athletic Conference tournament semifinal round as a two seed. Three 2021-22 all-conference selections (Hadley Doyle, Jackie Nylander, Lexi Keberle) marks the first time the Mustangs placed three of their own on a single All-AAC ballot, and first time three Mustangs were named all-conference selections in the same year since 2009 (Conference USA). The 2021-22 Mustangs took off on two separate four-match win streaks and notched six wins over ITA top-60-ranked programs, while achieving a national ranking as high as 36 – the highest team ranking for the Mustangs since 2011.
