Mustangs Defeat UTRGV 7-2

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU offense generated 21 shots with 12 on goal, en route to a 7-2 win against UTRGV Monday night at Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium.

The Mustangs (3-1) got the scoring started early and never turned back. SMU scored a season-high seven goals, the most since February 13, 2021, when the Mustangs scored seven against USF. Jose Ortiz and Knut Ahlander each had multigoal performances.

Ahlander picked up where he left off the last match, earning his second consecutive multigoal performance. Ahlander scored in the first minute of play off a Jose Ortiz assist. In the 53rd minute, he converted on a penalty kick, earning his second goal of the night and fifth of the season.

Shortly after, freshman Fredrik Skilberg earned his first collegiate goal in the fifth minute. Skilberg cashed in on the left side of the net after Alexander Petraeus delivered an assist off an outstanding effort to keep the ball in play.

Jose Ortiz recorded his second multigoal match of the season. Ortiz struck for the first time in the 49th minute, heading one in the middle of the net off an assist from Henry Howell. In the 62nd minute, Ortiz chipped in his second goal of the night, capitalizing off a missed save opportunity from the UTRGV keeper.

Mads Westergren found the net for the first time this season in the 42nd minute to extend the Mustang lead. Westergren found the top right of the goal off a Harvey Castro assist.

Freshman Elton Hedstrom finished off the Mustang scoring, shifting his way through the defense and cashing one in the 88th minute.

UTRGV's Kgodiso Sukati converted a penalty kick in the 26th minute to get the Vaquero's on the board. Anthony Patt scored UTRGV's second goal in the 77th minute.

SMU's back in action Friday night at 7 on the road against Saint Louis on ESPN+.
