SMU Wins Gerald Richey UTA Invitational

Grand Prairie, Texas (UTA) -- The Mustangs took first place in this morning's Gerald Richey UTA Invitational. They did so by achieving their goal of running as a team with a small amount of time between each runner.

"The objective for the day was accomplished," Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes said. "We had a 44 second spread from the first to the fifth runner. The women executed the race plan early and kept connected the entire 5k."

Maddie Hulcy held the second position the entire race and completed in the 5k in a time of 17:38 – holding a pace of 5:39 per mile. Hulcy said, for this race, they were trying to control the first mile and see what they could do from there for the rest of the race.

"I felt good heading into the back half of the race and really tried to push the pace in the last mile," Hulcy said. "I think the team is in a great place, and I'm looking forward to a strong training block over the next three weeks and a competitive race at Notre Dame!"

Kaitlyn Gearin ran a time of 17:53.8 crossing the line in third place. Shortly behind was Alanis Robineau Fauvey and Leoni Mierswa in fourth and fifth. Macey Hilton placed seventh in her college debut with a time of 18:22.6 with Jessie Crowley only two seconds behind in eighth. Nikoleta Rafailaki placed 15th.

The team placed first with only 21 points and an average time of 18:01.4.

The Mustangs have a few weeks until their next meet on September 30th at Notre Dame.

"We get to train for the next few weeks and build upon what is already happening," Haynes said.
