SMU Takes Down Top-Ranked Oklahoma State In Season Opener

STILLWATER, OKLA. –No. 4 SMU took down the top-ranked and defending national champion Oklahoma State Cowgirls 10-9 Saturday at the Pedigo-Hull Equestrian Center.

The Mustangs snapped Oklahoma State's 16 home meet winning streak and earned SMU its third consecutive victory against the Cowgirls. The last time SMU defeated the No. 1 team in the country was last season when SMU took down OSU 10-5.

The Mustangs swept the Most Outstanding Performer (MOP) awards. Ellie Yeager's 86 earned her the Fences MOP and Taylor Madden was named the Flat MOP after her impressive outing. On the Western side, Mallory Vroegh was crowned the Horsemanship MOP and Taylor Zimmerman took home the Reining MOP.

The meet began with Fences and Horsemanship coinciding. The Mustangs outscored the Cowgirls 3-2 in Horsemanship and OSU took Fences 3-2.

SMU won back-to-back points to start Horsemanship. Megan Waldron outscored OSU's Caroline Neilson 76-70.5 and Lily Anderson defeated Natalie Vargo 72.5-68.

OSU took the next two points. The reigning NCEA Horsemanship All-American Mallory Vroegh gave SMU the edge in the event, taking down Jojo Roberson 77.5-73.

In Fences, Alex Pielet was narrowly defeated by OSU's Riley Hogan, 74-73. Taylor Madden answered the OSU point, defeating Hope King 83-80. OSU took the next two points. Ellie Yeager completed the event with an 86-83 victory over Sydney North.
The second half of the meet started with Reining and Flat occurring simultaneously.

SMU dominated in Flat, taking three consecutive points on the way to a 3-1 event victory. Last season's NCEA First Team Flat All-American Taylor Madden picked up her second point of the day via an 86-82 victory over OSU's Hope King. Hensley Humphries earned her first victory of the season, defeating Sydnie Ziegler 82-80. Facing an 86, Madigan Eppink stepped up and delivered an 87 to defeat Cowgirl Ella Reinaeur and earn a Mustang point.

Miranda Seade and OSU's Hannah Coleman tied, each scoring an 83. OSU picked up the final point of the event.

OSU took Reining 3-2. Taylor Zimmerman picked up a 69-0 win over Molly Mitchell. The Cowgirls would go on to take three more points.

With the meet tied at nine apiece, it all came down to a re-ride between Chalyce Head and OSU's Hannah Lovrien. Chalyce Head took down Hannah Lovrien 69.5-68.5 to earn the Mustangs the meet-winning point.

SMU returns to action Nov. 4 against Baylor at the Dallas Equestrian Center.
