Dominant Second-Half Performance Propels No. 1 SMU To 13-6 Win Over No. 8 Baylor

DALLAS (SMU)- Dominant performances in Reining and Flat propelled top-ranked SMU to a 13-6 victory over No. 8 Baylor Friday afternoon at the Dallas Equestrian Center.

"I've continued to believe this is one of the most well balanced teams in all four events in the Dual Discipline NCEA this year," head coach Carol Gwin said. "They proved that today with our Reiner's and our Flat team closing out the second half in a dominant fashion. It was a great first home meet for us."

The Mustangs took three out of four of the Most Outstanding Performer (MOP) awards. Katy Merchant was crowned the MOP of Flat, Chalyce Head earned the honor in Reining and Nya Kearns claimed the accolade in Horsemanship.

In a back-and-forth first half, the Mustangs prevailed in Horsemanship, taking the event 3-2. Mallory Vroegh started the competition when she took down Baylor's Elsie Naruszewicz 75.5-72.5.
Nya Kearns outscored Baylor's Isabella Rosa 76-73.5 to earn an SMU point. With the event tied at two apiece, Lily Anderson delivered an SMU point after outscoring Isabella Rosa 76-73.5 to give the Mustangs the edge in Horsemanship.

After Baylor took the first two points in Fences, the Mustangs answered with back-to-back points, starting with Alex Pielet's convincing 85-74 victory over Baylor's Annie Vorhies. Elli Yeager defeated Madison Michell 79-77 for SMU's second point of the event. The Mustangs dropped Fences 3-2.

The second half started with Flat and Reining occurring simultaneously, with the Mustangs dominating both events. SMU swept Reining 4-0 and picked up a 4-1 victory on the Flat.

Taylor Zimmerman's score of 73 was tied for no point to start Reining. SMU went on to capture four consecutive points starting with Dani Latimer's 72-70.5 victory.

Maria Richards and Chalyce Head took the next two points with Richards defeating Shelby Clauson 70.5-65. Head took down Andie Pratt 69-68.5. Lily Anderson completed the Reining sweep with her 70-69.5 win over Baylor's Jenna Meimerstorf.

On the Flat, Madigan Eppink picked up a dominant 83-75 victory to earn the first point of the contest. Baylor picked up its lone point of the event on the next ride.

SMU took the next three points, starting with Hensley Humphries 71-66 victory over Annie Vorhies. Next, Taylor Madden dominated her point with a 84-73 win and Katy Merchant finished off the event taking down Baylor's Lauren Reid 84-78.

SMU returns to action Nov. 11-12 against Delaware State and UC Davis at the Dallas Equestrian Center.
