Major Test for Swimming & Diving vs. A&M this Friday

Postby Water Pony » Thu Jan 26, 2023 11:43 am

As the team progresses, we are facing a very strong Texas A&M team this Friday.

The SMU men's swimming and diving team will face off with No. 10 Texas A&M on senior day Friday at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr McMillion Natatorium. Seniors will be recognized before the competition begins at 2:45 p.m. CT.

Scouting Texas A&M
No. 10 Texas A&M is 5-3 on the season in dual action. The Aggies enter Friday's meet after winning their last three meets. Most recently, Texas A&M took down LSU 171-129.

Up To This Point
The Mustangs are 4-1 in dual action and enter the Texas A&M meet following a dominant 185-73 victory over Boston College. Prior to the Boston College meet, SMU took down TCU 207-93. The Mustangs won the SMU Invitational back in November after opening the season hosting the SMU classic. The Mustangs lone loss was a 214-137 setback at Minnesota.

Mustangs In The Recordbooks
Three Mustang relays broke the program record at the SMU Invite.

The Mustangs 200 freestyle relay consisting of Justin Baker, Lance Butler, Cole Bruns and Charlie Kaye set the program and pool record with a time of 1:17.17. The time ranks seventh nationally and earned an NCAA provisional standard. Bruns, Feehery, Russell Exum and Butler broke the SMU program record in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:08.66. Bruns, Butler, Kaye and Sage Sungail broke the SMU school record in the 400 freestyle relay after swimming a time of 2:52.95.

Several Mustangs have moved up on the all-time fastest performer list this season.

Feehery broke a pair of his own records on SMU's all-time fastest performer list in the 200 IM and 200 breaststroke. Feehery's time of 1:43.45 in the 200 IM remains first on the list in the event and his time of 1:53.17 lands at second in the 200 breaststroke. Feehery became the program's fastest all-time performer in the 200 freestyle after covering the distance in 1:34.48. Additionally, Feehery claimed the top spot in the 100 IM and moved to fifth all-time in the 100 breaststroke.

In the 50 freestyle, Butler moved to No. 3 and Bruns landed in the sixth spot. Butler moved to No. 10 all-time in the 100 freestyle. Tyler Barfield is the 10th all-time fastest performer in the 200 breaststroke and Exum moved to No. 2 on the list in the 100 butterfly.

Last Time Out

The SMU men's swimming and diving team dominated Boston College 185-73. SMU divers represented the Mustangs at the Georgia Diving Invitational, a three-day event on the campus of the University of Georgia. Peter Smithson was crowned the AAC Diver of the Week for the third time this season after an impressive week at the event. Smithson earned top-five finishes while achieving NCAA Zone Standards in all three diving events. The senior was the runner-up on 1 meter with an NCAA Zone Qualifying score of 328.80. Smithson scored a 340.65 on Platform to earn fourth place and finished fifth on 3 meter with a score of 328.80. Dominic Hoefer and Tyler Coffey qualified for the 1 meter finals. Hoefer finished sixth and earned an NCAA Zone Mark after scoring a 205.25. Coffey's 245.15 landed him in 12th place.

Making The Cut
Eight Mustangs have earned NCAA B Cuts this season. Three Mustang divers have earned Zone Standards on 1 meter, while two have earned the accolade on both 1 and 3 meter. SMU's 200 freestyle relay time of 1:17.17 achieved an NCAA Provisional Cut and ranks seventh in the nation.

Question...when SMU goes on the road for a meet, do they take the whole squad or just a part of it?

I cannot speak to current policy, but historically we traveled with half of the squad. Back in the old days  we swam two or three swimmers per event. It appears teams swim more than that, especially at home meets.

Good question.

I think there are squad limits for travel. When the men went to Minnesota in the fall, they could only take about 1/2 the team. The group that stayed in Dallas, mimicked the meet in Minnesota to compete against the ones that traveled.

That is a great idea for the swimmers to compete virtually; but unofficially.

What they actually did (great idea from Greg), is have the guys that stayed at SMU put on racing/body suits, and had a virtual meet with the guys that went to Minnesota, who wore practice suits at that meet. So SMU had 2 teams of people racing each other that weekend. The team that stayed home won. Great way to get all your swimmers involved on a meet weekend.

In regards to the A&M - neither team was rested or wore racing suits. A&M is just a good amount better than SMU right now - I am referring to the men. The women are not close at this point. The men likely will swim much better at Texas next week - that is what happened last year. The men have several individuals that can make NCAA's - most likely Colin Feehery, Cotton Fields, Lance Butler, then after them - Angus Corbeau, Sage Sungail, Cole Bruns, Russell Exum. Great chance to make the meet in the 200 Free relay, decent chance in the 400 Free relay and 200 medley. The 800 free relay and 400 Medley are long shots, but not out of the question. What I am hoping for at Conference in 3 weeks is for some young guys to make some very big jumps - Freshmen - Sage Sungail, Jack Forrest; Soph - Joe Rusnock, Angus Corbeau, Jr - Lance Butler. Those are my prime candidates, but hopefully there will be more than that.

Thanks, ponyswim, for the insight. This is quite encouraging. Prior to Greg's return to the Hilltop to be our Men's Coach, we had few swimmers who had a legitimate shot at qualifying for Nationals. And, if our relays do qualify, the progress will be even better as this demonstrates depth and gains exposure and experience against the best teams. It has been a long time since we could compete significantly at this level.

What do you all think about the impact of a Pac12 move for swimming and diving?

For our non-revenue sports, a move to the PAC-12 is a plus for higher quality of competition, including Swimming & Diving despite travel to the West Coast. The AAC had travel time issues too.

As for Swimming & Diving, California, Arizona, Arizona State, and Stanford are strong programs. With our new Aquatic Complex (two long course pools), our programs will be able to accelerate our progress and improve recruiting. California has a huge pool of talent. The PAC-12 Men’s Swimming only loses USC, while UCLA and USC Women’s teams will leave. The remainder offer a strong competition.

Other non-revenue sports will benefit, including M&W Soccer, Volleyball. Rowing, etc. Basketball will be exciting, plus rumors of Gonzaga joining would be smart.

All in all, Football, MBB, WBB, and non-revenue sports move up in class.
