Mustangs Fall To No. 19 Texas A&M

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's swimming and diving team fell to No. 19 Texas A&M, 176-113, at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium Friday evening.

Luana Alonso and Lucrezia Napoletano led the Mustangs with individual event wins. Alonso stayed unbeaten in butterfly events, winning the 200 distance in her first race of the day at 2:01.88. She followed up the performance with runner-up honors in the 100 (54.32). Napoletano continued to lead in freestyle events with a win in the 100 at 51.17, a second-place finish in the 200 (1:51.72) and a third-place finish in the 50 (23.70).

SMU also won the closing 200-yard freestyle relay as Napoletano, Indra Vandenbussche, Tiffanie Ruan and Johanna Gudmundsdottir clocked in at 1:33.43 for the win.

A pair of additional Mustangs earned runner-up honors, including Annabelle Corcoran in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:28.01) and Jimena Leguizamon Leal in the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.16).

Third-place performances were turned in by Leguizamon Leal in the 100 back (56.84), Julia Yakushi in the 100 breast (1:04.98), Jenna Watson in the 200 free (1:52.48) and Valentina Becerra in the 100 fly (55.43).

The event opened with a third-place finish from the 200-yard medley relay team of Alonso, Watson, Becerra and Gudmundsdottir.

In diving action, Nicole Stambo finished fourth on both 1 meter (280.95) and 3 meter (284.40). Both scores met the NCAA Zone standard.

Prior to the event, the Mustangs honored 10 seniors – Valentina Becerra, Annabelle Corcoran, Hannah Craley, Karsten Fields, Janelle Gursoy, Frederica Kizek, Nicole Stambo, Alex Stevens, Meriel Upton and Julia Yakushi.

The Mustangs are back in action Friday, Feb. 2 at No. 2 Texas.
