No. 1 SMU Opens Spring Slate With 13-5 Win Over No. 9 UT Martin

DALLAS (SMU)- SMU's equestrian team started its spring slate on a high note Saturday as the No. 1 ranked Mustangs defeated No. 9 UT Martin by a 13-5 margin at the Dallas Equestrian Center.

SMU (5-0) has now won 10 out of the last 11 meetings against the Skyhawks, including a perfect 6-0 mark in Dallas.

SMU swept the Most Outstanding Performer (MOP) honors. Augusta Iwasaki (Fences), Hensley Humphries (Flat), Dani Latimer (Reining), and Lily Anderson (Horsemanship) were recognized for their rides. Iwasaki and Anderson earned their second MOP honors of the season.

"This was a great meet to start off the spring season with a bang," head coach Carol Gwin said. "I feel like Coach Kearns and Coach Persons had this team very prepared and ready to compete. What is most unique to me about this team is that we have had such a large variety of stars in all four events on any given day, and that's when you know you have a well-balanced team."

The meet started with Horsemanship and Flat coinciding with the Mustangs only dropping one point combined in both events.

Alexa Black put up the first point of the day with a 75-72.5 victory. After that, the Mustangs rattled off three straight points starting with Megan Waldron's 72.5-72 defeat of Kate Davis. Nya Kearns took down UTM's Lexi Bailey by a convincing 74.5-69.5 count.

Lily Anderson moved to 5-0 on the year in Horsemanship with a 75.5-73.5 victory. Megan Waldron scored a 73, tying her opponent.

The Mustangs took the first four points of the Flat contest. Taylor Madden defeated Haley Kane 78-77 to begin the event.

Madigan Eppink (5-0) and Hensley Humphries (4-0) remained perfect this season earning back-to-back Mustang points. Eppink took down Sydney Hott 80-79, and Humphries won her ride by a dominating 85-76 count.

Katy Merchant extended the Mustang advantage with an 82-81 victory. UTM's lone point of the first half came via a 79-74 win in the event's final ride.

The second half started with Fences and Reining occurring simultaneously. SMU won Fences 3-2 and battled to a 2-2 draw in Reining.

Augusta Iwasaki (3-0) and Elli Yeager (5-0) continued their impressive seasons in Fences. Yeager dominated her point, winning 80-73 and Iwasaki won her ride 84-82.

Devin Seek claimed the Mustangs third point of Fences with an 83-76 win over Hailey Kane.

In Reining, Dani Latimer took down UTM's Kate Davis 72-69. Chalyce Head remained unblemished this season with a 71-69 victory.

UTM claimed two points in Reining.
