Mustangs Finish In Sixth At Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate

TUCSON, Ariz. (SMU) - SMU men's golf finished in sixth at the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate moving up one spot on the final day of competition.

The Mustangs came into the day with a share of seventh place on the leaderboard. The tournament picked up where it left off in the middle of round two on Tuesday. SMU finished up the second round at six-under 282 and followed it up with a four-under 284 in round three. The Mustangs jumped New Mexico and into sixth place in the 15-team field.

Justin Thompson led the Mustangs through the two-day event thanks to rounds of 70 and 69 in the first two rounds. The graduate senior finished in 19th, his third top-20 showing in five events this season.

After a pair of two-under rounds, Nathan Petronzio shot a 74 on the final day to finish in a tie for 27th. The junior has now finished in the top third in each of the five events on the 2022-23 campaign.

J. Holland Humphries had the strongest round by a Mustang on the final day. Humphries carded a 67 to jump up 32 spots on the leaderboard and into a tie for 41st.

Holden Wisener shot even par in two of the three rounds and finished in a tie for 57th place. Sitting alongside Wisener in 57th, Zachary Kingsland finished the tournament with a pair of even par rounds on Tuesday.

SMU returns to the course on Feb. 26-28 for the Southern Highlands Collegiate hosted by UNLV from the Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nevada.
