No. 1 SMU Handles No. 10 UT Martin In First Road Test Of The Spring

MARTIN, TENN. (SMU)—The No. 1 SMU equestrian team captured a 12-6 victory over No. 10 UT Martin in its first road meet of the spring Saturday at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Pavilion in Martin, Tennessee.

SMU (6-0) has now won 11 out of the last 12 meetings against the Skyhawks.

"This was a good start to the spring season and a good road win," head coach Carol Gwin said. "We have some things to clean up before we head back on the road in two weeks, but I'm pretty happy with where we are now."

SMU won three out of the four Most Outstanding Performer (MOP) honors. Augusta Iwasaki (Fences), Mallory Vroegh (Horsemanship) and Taylor Madden (Flat) were recognized for their rides. Iwasaki's MOP marks her second straight and third of the year. Vroegh and Madden earned their second MOP honors of the season.

SMU started the meet strong with a dominating 4-0 win in Fences.

Elli Yeager (6-0) and Iwasaki (4-0) scored back-to-back points to both remain undefeated on the season. Yeager put the Mustangs on the board first with an 86-82 victory over Sydney Hott, and Iwasaki took down Tyler Anderson 86-78.

Devin Seek won her point 80-79.5 and Madden finished off the event sweep with a 75-63 victory over Julia Gilman.

After dropping the first point of Horsemanship, SMU rattled off four straight starting with Nya Kearns 72.5-70 victory over Emma Schaefer.

Vroegh picked up a dominating 73.5-65.5 win and Alexa Black claimed a Mustang point after besting her opponent 71.5-70.5. Lily Anderson moved to 6-0 on the year with a convincing 76.5-69.5 win.

SMU and UT Martin tied 2-2 in Flat. Emma Engel defeated UTM's Sydney Hott 73-64. Madden picked up her second point of the day with a season-high score of 89.

In Reining, Chalyce Head moved to 6-0 on the season with a 69.5-67.5 victory. Anderson picked up her second point of the contest after defeating Logan Putvinski 71.5-71.
