Mustangs Three-Peat As AAC Champions

DALLAS (SMU)—SMU men's swimming and diving team won its third consecutive American Athletic Conference Championship, defeating Cincinnati 1267-1134 on Saturday at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium.

Colin Feehery was named the Co-Most Outstanding Swimmer and Greg Rhodenbaugh was awarded Coach of the year for the third straight season. Sage Sungail was crowned the AAC's Most Outstanding Freshman. Earlier in the week Darian Schmidt was announced as the Diving Coach of the Year and Peter Smithson was named the Most Outstanding Diver.

This was the Mustangs third overall AAC title and 44th conference championship in program history. They have won 19 titles since 1997.

Feehery added to his impressive resume with another individual conference championship. Feehery won the 200 breaststroke, with an NCAA B Standard time of 1:54.26. Angus Corbeau earned an NCAA Zone Mark with a 1:56.87 to finish second. Joe Rusnock checked in third after touching the wall at a career mark of 1:58.02, moving to 10th on SMU's all-time fastest performer list in the event.

In the 100 freestyle, Lance Butler was crowned the AAC's best with a career mark of 43.07, earning an NCAA B Cut and moving to third on SMU's all-time fastest performer list. Cole Bruns was the event's runner-up after clocking in at 43.66.

Cotton Fields repeated as the conference champion in the 200 butterfly after posting a time of 1:44.27 (NCAA B Standard).

Jack Forrest opened the night session as the runner-up in the 1650 freestyle. Forrest moved to fifth on SMU's all-time fastest performer list after covering the distance in 15:14.71 and hit an NCAA B Standard.

The Mustangs earned a 2,3 finish in the 200 backstroke. Rob McCall's career-best time of 1:42.97 earned him a runner-up finish, NCAA B Standard and moved the sophomore to fourth on SMU's all-time fastest performer list in the event. Jack Easton swam a 1:44.95 to claim third place.

SMU's 400 freestyle relay closed out the week with a bang. Butler, Bruns, Charlie Kaye and Feehery represented the Mustangs and completed their relay sweep after setting a new school and pool record time of 2:51.96.

SMU now has 75 individual championships through 10 seasons in the American, with 25 coming on the diving side. The Mustangs have also won 21 relay championships.

Final Score
SMU- 1267
Cincinnati- 1134

Up next, qualified Mustang divers will compete at the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships March 7-9 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Swimmers will compete at an NCAA Last Chance Meet March 3-5 and await NCAA Championships selections.

Our Men's Team is making progress in building quality and depth. However, the AAC lacks Men's Teams with only Cincinnati, who will depart in 2024. A move to a P5 conference for All Sports would benefit us competitively and with recruiting so we can accelerate progress.
