Napoletano Wins Most Outstanding Swimmer, Mustangs Finish Third At AACs

DALLAS (SMU) – Freshman Lucrezia Napoletano was named the Most Outstanding Swimmer of the American Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships and the Mustangs turned in a third-place finish at the six-day event.

Napoletano is the third Mustang to win AAC Most Outstanding Swimmer honors, joining Erin Trahan (2019) and Matea Samardzic (2018, 2017). She is also the first Mustang to sweep individual events since Trahan in 2019 (50 free, 100 fly, 200 fly). Overall, Napoletano scored the maximum 96 points.

Napoletano's third win came in the 100-yard freestyle where she became the fifth fastest performer all-time at SMU at 48.61. The time is also her first NCAA B cut in the event. The sprint freestyle 1-2 punch continued for the Mustangs as Johanna Gudmundsdottir secured a B standard of her own with a career-best 49.30. The event championship was the second straight for SMU, with Gudmundsdottir winning in 2022.

Securing valuable points out of the Consolation Final was Indra Vandenbussche (50.37), who was 10th overall, and Tiffanie Ruan (50.73 CB), who was 13th.

Luana Alonso continued to impress in the fly, earning second place in the 200 distance and dropping her career mark to 1:56.63. The NCAA B standard time places her fourth on SMU's all-time list.

Maxine Parkinson covered the 200 fly in a personal-best 1:59.27 for fifth place, and Valentina Becerra (2:01.14) was 10th overall and Carlotta Scarpitti (2:03.36, CB) 19th.

Frederica Kizek opened the evening with a runner-up finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle. The senior touched the wall in 16:27.79 for her third-career NCAA B standard in the event. The time was a tenth of a second off her career mark. Annabelle Corcoran also swam in the top heat of the event, finishing 13th overall at 17:06.62.

The Championships concluded with a silver-medal performance from SMU's 400-yard freestyle relay. Napoletano, Vandenbussche, Alonso and Gudmundsdottir finished in a season-best 3:18.41.

Jimena Leguizamon Leal placed sixth in the 200-yard backstroke A Final with a time of 1:59.27, while Kate Janzen took the top spot in the C Final to finish 17th at 2:00.70, over three seconds better than her prelim time.

Five Mustangs scored in the 200-yard breaststroke on the final day with Jenna Watson leading the way with a career-best 2:15.03 for 11th overall. Ashley Lugbill (2:15.81, CB) also scored out of Consols at a tie for 12th. Julia Yakushi (2:17.60) finished 18th, Hannah Lockyer (2:18.25, CB) 19th and Maddy Lewis (2:19.18) 21st.

The top-three finishes in each event are awarded All-American Athletic Conference honors.

Curious how many Gold Medals each team won. Houston and FIU seemed to have many more women competing than SMU, therefore, racking up points down ticket. At any rate, congrats to the ladies.

Freshman Lucrezia Napoletano looks like the real deal.

Lucrezia swam well and has the opportunity to get a lot better. Also, Luana Alonso, sophomore transfer from Virgina Tech had a good meet. Johanna Gudmundsdottir was second to Lucrezia in 2 events. SMU swam pretty well in the women, but their diving points were really poor. They had one girl - who did well, but that was it. No other divers. SMU actually had the most swimming points, but was 285 points behind Houston and 128 behind FIU in diving.

The men were mediocre. Good 500's for Sage Sungail, and Jack Forrest, then pretty blah in my opinion.
They swim a meet in Austin next weekend and hopefully will be a lot better.

It appears that the Austin Short Course Meet is the last event for most of the team. As of now, who on the Men’s Team is heading to the NCAAs. I hope we have relays which qualify.

On the Women's side - Luana Alonso made NCAA's in the 100 fly, so she will get to swim the 100 and 200 fly.
On the men's side - nobody has definitely made the meet. Colin Feehery is on the edge depending on what happens this weekend. Pretty much the whole men's team is at the American Short Course Meet in Austin starting tomorrow. The hope is the Colin goes a little faster in any of his event to clinch a spot. Cotton Fields and Lance Butler have the next best chances. Their 200 free relay needs to make an A cut - meaning about a tenth of a second faster than they have been. If they do that, then they can swim that relay and at least one more.

Congrats and good luck to Luana.

As for the men, I hope and expect Colin to make his cuts, along Cotton and Lance. Qualifying a relay is an important step for us. It has been a while since we have been visible individually or with relays. I know we are making gains, but sending a "team" to NCAAs is meaningful and will demonstrate progress. Thx, ponyswim

Only Colin going to NCAA's. He was 1:52.0 200 breast in Austin. He can swim 200 IM, 400 IM, 200 Breast, though I wonder if he will swim the 400 IM - he should probably just rest for the 200 breast that day. Other good results from Austin (but not good enough to make NCAA's) - Joe Rusnock - 53.0 100 breast, Russell Exum - 46.2 100 fly, Cotton - 1:43.0 200 fly. A couple of freshman sprinters - Kaleb Ikbal(44.56 100 and 20.50 50) and Connor McClintic (45.0 100 and 20.60 50) showed a lot of improvement this year and maybe can help next year.
All the guys need to stay and train with Greg this summer (or go to a really good program at home). A pretty good recruiting year is in the works.

ponyswim,

Thanks for sharing the results from Austin. A couple of comments.

Colin's time in the 200 Breast is very impressive. Historically, the Breaststroke was slow with strict rules that the head could not go under the water, except on the turns. During the 1967 NCAAs at Michigan State, SMU's Ken Merten was the first swimmer ever to break 1 minute in the 100 Breast. The crowd went wild. For Colin and modern breatstrokers to go 1:52 for 200 would have been a great time for Butterfliers and Backstrokers back then. Amazing.

The other SMU swimmers' times were impressive, but it demonstrates the current depth of college swimming where their performances don't get them or our relays to nationals.

Even more amazing for an old timer, me.
