DALLAS (SMU) – Freshman Lucrezia Napoletano was named the Most Outstanding Swimmer of the American Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships and the Mustangs turned in a third-place finish at the six-day event.
Napoletano is the third Mustang to win AAC Most Outstanding Swimmer honors, joining Erin Trahan (2019) and Matea Samardzic (2018, 2017). She is also the first Mustang to sweep individual events since Trahan in 2019 (50 free, 100 fly, 200 fly). Overall, Napoletano scored the maximum 96 points.
Napoletano's third win came in the 100-yard freestyle where she became the fifth fastest performer all-time at SMU at 48.61. The time is also her first NCAA B cut in the event. The sprint freestyle 1-2 punch continued for the Mustangs as Johanna Gudmundsdottir secured a B standard of her own with a career-best 49.30. The event championship was the second straight for SMU, with Gudmundsdottir winning in 2022.
Securing valuable points out of the Consolation Final was Indra Vandenbussche (50.37), who was 10th overall, and Tiffanie Ruan (50.73 CB), who was 13th.
Luana Alonso continued to impress in the fly, earning second place in the 200 distance and dropping her career mark to 1:56.63. The NCAA B standard time places her fourth on SMU's all-time list.
Maxine Parkinson covered the 200 fly in a personal-best 1:59.27 for fifth place, and Valentina Becerra (2:01.14) was 10th overall and Carlotta Scarpitti (2:03.36, CB) 19th.
Frederica Kizek opened the evening with a runner-up finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle. The senior touched the wall in 16:27.79 for her third-career NCAA B standard in the event. The time was a tenth of a second off her career mark. Annabelle Corcoran also swam in the top heat of the event, finishing 13th overall at 17:06.62.
The Championships concluded with a silver-medal performance from SMU's 400-yard freestyle relay. Napoletano, Vandenbussche, Alonso and Gudmundsdottir finished in a season-best 3:18.41.
Jimena Leguizamon Leal placed sixth in the 200-yard backstroke A Final with a time of 1:59.27, while Kate Janzen took the top spot in the C Final to finish 17th at 2:00.70, over three seconds better than her prelim time.
