No. 1 SMU Takes Down No. 6 South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. (SMU)— The top-ranked SMU equestrian team started out its three-day road stretch with a 13-7 victory over No. 6 South Carolina at One Wood Farm on Thursday afternoon.

SMU won three out of the four Most Outstanding Performer (MOP) honors. Augusta Iwasaki (Fences), Nya Kearns (Horsemanship) and Taylor Madden (Flat) were recognized for their rides. Iwasaki's MOP marks her third straight and fourth of the year. Madden earned her third MOP honor of the season and second consecutive. Kearns claimed the accolade for the second time this year.

"I'm really proud of the way the girls rode today," head coach Carol Gwin said. "It was a great win and we'll keep pressing forward."

SMU (7-0) won the first seven points of the contest. The Mustang Flat squad earned a 5-0 sweep of South Carolina, and SMU's Horsemanship team picked up a 3-2 event win.

The Mustangs swept on the Flat for the second time this season. Taylor Madden scored the first point of the contest with a 92-90 victory over Gamecock Trinity Hammerschmidt. Hensley Humphries moved to 5-0-1 with a dominating 89-78 win.

Miranda Seade took down South Carolina's Madeline Schaefer 91-90 and Emma Engel won her point by an 88-87 mark. Madigan Eppink's 88 completed the Mustangs Flat sweep.

Nya Kearns, Alexa Black and Megan Waldron scored three consecutive points to begin the Horsemanship competition. Kearns picked up a convincing 77-67 victory. Black defeated Alyssa Jipping 73.5-71 and Waldron won her ride 71.5-70.5.

The second half saw Fences and Reining occur simultaneously. SMU won Fences 3-2 and dropped Reining by a 3-2 margin.

Elli Yeager (7-0) and Augusta Iwasaki (5-0) remained perfect on the year and picked up back-to-back points. Yeager struck first with a dominant 87-74 victory and Iwasaki took down Sydney DeGrazia by a 94-85 margin. Devin Seek countered a pair of Gamecock points with an 84-82 victory.

In Reining action, Lily Anderson defeated Chloe Stephenson 71.5-68 and Chalyce Head extended her unblemished record to 7-0 with a 69.5-60 victory.
