Top-Ranked SMU Takes Down No. 8 Baylor

WACO, Texas (SMU)—The top-ranked SMU equestrian team defeated No. 8 Baylor 10-8 Thursday afternoon at the Willis Family Equestrian Center.

With the win, SMU moves to 9-1 on the year and has picked up four out of its last five wins on the road. The Mustangs have defeated Baylor in six consecutive meets, including two this season.

SMU won two out of the four Most Outstanding Performer (MOP) honors. Hannah Hoch (Fences) and Alexa Black (Horsemanship) were recognized for their rides. Both riders collect the accolade fo the first time this season.

"I think this team and the coaches continue to step up their game," head coach Carol Gwin said. "We're trying to continue our path toward the national championships. I'm very proud of everyone."

The meet started with Fences and Horsemanship coinciding. SMU took a 7-1 lead into halftime.

Hannah Hoch put the Mustangs on the board first with an 84-81 win over Baylor's Dominika Silversri. Devin Seek followed, earning a 78-75 win.

The NCEA February Fences Rider of the Month Augusta Iwasaki moved to a perfect 8-0 on the year with an 84-80 victory.

The reigning Horsemanship Rider of the Month Mallory Vroegh continued her winning ways, picking up a convincing 78-71 victory over Baylor's Elsie Naruszewicz. Lily Anderson dominated her ride, picking up a 76.5-69.5 victory.

After the Bears took a Horsemanship point, SMU closed the event with back-to-back points, starting with Alexa Black's 79.5-77 win over Nadalee Vasquez. Nya Kearns finished off Baylor in Horsemanship with a 78-74.5 victory.

Reining and Flat occurred simultaneously in the second half of the meet.

Dani Latimer defeated Baylor's Jenna Meimerstorf 73-72.5 to earn SMU its first point in the event. Taylor Zimmerman returned to the win column with a 70.5-70 victory.

In Flat action, Madigan Eppink dominated her ride, picking up an 85-63 victory.

SMU returns to action vs. Texas A&M on senior day. Action is slated for 10 a.m. at the Dallas Equestrian Center.
