Nine Mustangs Earn All-America Honors

DALLAS, Texas (SMU) –Nine members of the SMU equestrian team were tabbed as 2022-23 Ariat All-America selections, the National Collegiate Equestrian Association announced Thursday.

Augusta Iwasaki, Nya Kearns and Mallory Vroegh were first-team selections in their respective events. Madigan Eppink was a second-team selection and Emma Engel and Hensley Humphries were honorable mentions on the Flat. Lily Anderson was a second-team all-Horsemanship team selection, and Alexa Black was an honorable mention. Chalyce Head was named a second-team Reining all-American.

In her inaugural season as a Mustang, Iwasaki compiled a perfect 9-0 record and picked up four Most Outstanding Performer (MOP) honors. In addition, the freshman was named the NCEA February Rider of the Month.

Vroegh and Kearns both earn all-America honors in back-to-back seasons in Horsemanship. Vroegh holds a 7-1-1 record this season and was the Horsemanship Rider of the Month in September and February. The graduate student has collected four MOP awards and owns the program's most career event points with 42.

Kearns continued her decorated career this season, posting an 8-2 record and collecting a pair of MOP accolades. Kearns was the March Horsemanship Rider of the Month and holds a 28-5-1 career mark. Kearns was the NCEA Horsemanship Rider of the Year during her freshman season and has been named an all-American all three years as a Mustang.

Anderson earned a second-team Horsemanship nod after an impressive 9-1 record, including one MOP award. Anderson started the year winning six points in a row and closed the regular season with three consecutive victories. Black was an honorable mention after going 7-3 and winning seven out of her last eight points.

On the Flat, Eppink secured second-team honors after compiling an 8-2 record. The graduate student added one MOP. Engel (4-2, one MOP) and Humphries (6-2-1, one MOP) were named honorable mentions.

Head was a second-team all-American in Reining after finishing the regular season with a 7-2-1 record. The junior won her first seven points of the season in the event.

SMU was announced as the top seed for the 2023 NCEA National Championships. The Mustangs are set to face eighth-seeded Baylor on April 13th in Ocala, Florida, at 8:30 a.m.

Our equestrian team is now freakin dominant.

It is somewhat amusing that there's 50+ all American honors for a sport with ~20 total teams.
