Top-Ranked Mustangs Ready For NCEA National Championships

No. 1 SMU vs. No. 8 Baylor, April 13- 7:30 a.m. CT
World Equestrian Center - Ocala, Florida


UP TO THIS POINT
SMU was announced as the top seed for the 2023 National Collegiate Equestrian Association National Championships for the first time in program history. SMU finished off the regular season with an 11-6 win over then-No. 4 Texas A&M. Prior to taking down the Aggies, the Mustangs started off March with a 10-9 win over Baylor in Waco. SMU won two out of its three road meets in SEC country Feb. 23-25. The Mustangs started off the trip dominating South Carolina 13-7. One day later, SMU downed Georgia 10-9. SMU suffered its lone loss of the season Feb. 25, a 15-5 setback at Auburn. SMU opened its spring slate with back-to-back victories over UT Martin. SMU defeated the Skyhawks 13-5 on Jan. 28 in Dallas, and 12-6 on Feb. 11 in Martin, Tennessee. The Mustangs finished the fall with an unblemished 4-0 record. SMU started the season taking down then-No. 1 OSU 10-9 on the road followed by beating Baylor 13-6 in Dallas. SMU closed out the fall in dominating fashion, taking down Delaware State 19-1 and UC Davis 14-6.

THE SERIES
Baylor is 6-9 overall and 2-4 in Big 12 play. SMU won the first meeting of the season, a 13-6 victory on Nov. 4 at the Dallas Equestrian Center and took down the Bears 10-9 in Waco on March 2.

Nine members of the SMU equestrian team were tabbed as 2022-23 Ariat All-America selections.Augusta Iwasaki, Nya Kearns and Mallory Vroegh were first-team selections in their respective events. Madigan Eppink was a second-team selection and Emma Engel and Hensley Humphries were honorable mentions on the Flat. Lily Anderson was a second-team all-Horsemanship team selection, and Alexa Black was an honorable mention. Chalyce Head was named a second-team Reining all-American.

GETTING IT DONE IN THE ARENA AND THE CLASSROOM
The SMU equestrian team had 18 student-athletes named to the 2023 APHA All-Academic teams and the Academic Honor Roll. The Mustangs included on the NCEA All Academic First Team are Lily Anderson, Madigan Eppink, Hensley Humphries, Taylor Madden, Alex Pielet, Maria Richards, Miranda Seade, Devin Seek, Mallory Vroegh and Megan Waldron. Emma Engel a spot on the second team. Faith Davis, Katherine Delagarza, Avery Erickson, Becky Morris, Addi Piper, Claire Robertson and Macie Soderquist earned the honor roll distinction.

TITLE HUNTING
The Mustangs will be chasing the first national title in program history. SMU is coming off its fourth consecutive conference championship and second straight ECAC title in 2021-22, in a year that saw four NCEA All-America selections. SMU capitalized off its momentum from the 2020-21 season last year, making it to the national semifinal meet for the second consecutive season. In 2020-21, the program saw many firsts and records broken on its run to the 2020-21 national championship meet. The Mustangs return all but two starters from last season's semifinal team.

SMU VS. THE FIELD
The Mustangs have faced six out of the other seven teams in contention for a championship. SMU defeated Oklahoma State in the first meet of the season and took down Baylor once in Dallas and again in Waco. SMU played South Carolina, Georgia and Auburn in three consecutive days, going 2-1, with the lone loss of the season coming at Auburn. The Mustangs wrapped up the regular season with an 11-6 defeat of Texas A&M. SMU and TCU didn't play in the regular season.
