Men’s Swimming Adds Three Transfers to 2023 Class

DALLAS - SMU head coach Greg Rhodenbaugh has added three transfers to his 2023 recruiting class.

The Mustangs are looking to build upon their success from the previous season with its new additions. SMU is coming off three American Athletic Conference Championships in a row.

Below is a brief introduction of each incoming signee and/or transfer for the 2023 roster:

Chris Mykkanen - Graduate Transfer | Tustin, Calif./Transfer from University of Nevada Las Vegas

Mykkanen joins the Mustangs with a focus on the 200 and 500 freestyles. He comes from a family of swimmers with both collegiate and Olympic experience. In 2019, he was the conference champion in the 500-freestyle. During his high school years at Foothill High School, he lettered in all four years and helped his team to the CIF Division II Team Championship. As a graduate student at SMU, Mykkanen will be studying Civil Engineering.

Harold Lockhart - Redshirt Junior | Birmingham, Ala/Transfer from Rollins College

Lockhart comes to SMU as a decorated swimmer from NCAA Division II's Rollins College. He is currently the Division II champion in 200, 500 and 1,000 yard freestyles. The 6'5" swimmer was named the Sunshine State Conference Swimmer of the Year and to the ALL-SSC First Team. At Spain Park High School from 2016-19, Lockhart was the two-time AHSAA State Champion in the 500-yard freestyle. In Club Swim, he participated in the Birmingham Swim League — he was the two-time Southeastern Champion in both the 500-yard freestyle and the 1650-yard freestyle.

Jack Hoagland - Graduate Transfer | Albuquerque, N.M./Transfer from University of Notre Dame

With experience at the University of Notre Dame, Hoagland joins the Mustangs coming highly decorated from the Atlantic Coast Conference, most recently qualifying for NCAAs in 2023. He was a four-time ACC Champion, seven-time All American and the 2022 ACC Most Valuable Player. He has both National and International Team Experience via the 2023 World University Games and specializes in the 1650, 500 and 400 IM. The 6'6" swimmer was also a four-time State Champion, four-time Team MVP and 10-time program record holder for La Cueva High School.

Great to see a So Cal athlete added to the roster. Given the popularity of SMU as a destination for California kids and the wealth of high level high school / club aquatics programs and talent in the state, would be great to see some of those kids choosing to swim at SMU.
