Men's Soccer Announces 2023 Schedule

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU men's soccer team unveiled its 2023 schedule on Wednesday.

SMU opens the season with back-to-back matches at Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium. The Mustangs will face UTRGV in the season opener on August 24.

The schedule features six teams that made the 2022 NCAA Championship, including non-conference matchups with Denver and Saint Louis. AAC foes Memphis, USF, Tulsa, and FIU were also in the NCAA field.

SMU is set to face Central Arkansas, Oral Roberts, and Yale before conference play begins. The Mustangs will face GCU in a mid-season non-conference match.

The American schedule includes home contests with Memphis, Charlotte, FAU, and Temple. SMU will hit the road for matchups with USF, FIU, Tulsa, and UAB.

SMU checked in at No. 18 in the final United Soccer Coaches rankings last season in a year that saw the Mustangs finish with a 10-6-1 record and a runner-up finish in the AAC standings. The Mustangs finished 8-1-1 at home in the inaugural season in Washburne Stadium. SMU earned its 34th appearance in the NCAA tournament and fifth since Kevin Hudson took over the program in 2015. The Mustangs entered as the No. 11 overall seed. SMU finished in the top 15 in the country in assists per game, points per game and scoring offense.

Six members of the 2022 squad were named to the All-AAC teams. Knut Ahlander was named the league's Offensive and Midfielder of the Year and returner Alexander Petraeus was crowned the Rookie of the Year. Mads Westergren and Ahlander were selected to the All-AAC First Team and JP Jordan and Petraeus were selected to the conference's Second Team. Nikola Djordjevic, Fredrik Skilberg and Petraeus earned All-Rookie Team nods.
