No. 11 SMU Falls At Denver

DENVER, Colo. (SMU) – The No. 11 SMU men's soccer team fell 3-1 in its first away game of the season against Denver, who is receiving votes, at 8 p.m. CT on Friday.

Denver built a 3-0 lead in the first half. Denver's Oje Ofunrein recorded two goals, scoring in the 24th and 28th minutes. Lukas Fisher made it 3-0 in the 42nd minute.

The Mustangs got on the board in the second half on a goal from Alexander Petræus who crossed it into the net from the right side of the pitch, sending it right past Denver's Isaac Nehme. Petræus was recently named to the Aug. 28 American Athletic Conference weekly honor roll after posting two assists in the season opener against UTRGV.

The Mustangs outshot the Pioneers 20-5 for the game. In the first half, SMU recorded six shots — including two from freshman forward Niv Berkovitz and one on goal from sophomore forward Bailey Sparks.

By the 75th minute, the Mustangs were outshooting Denver 17-5. SMU sent three shots in the final 15 minutes, keeping the pressure on Denver.

SMU hosts No. 25 Oral Roberts on Monday at Washburne Stadium at 7 p.m.
