Mustangs Defeat Baylor 2-1 To Finish Road Trip

WACO, Texas (SMU) – SMU women’s soccer capped off its three-game road stint with a 2-1 victory over Baylor on Thursday at Betty Lou Mays Field.

“Tonight was a great response from our team to get a road win against a very good team,” said Head Coach Nicole Nelson. “We had a lot of people step in and perform up to their potential. We are proud of everyone’s focus and grit.”

Senior Leah Chancey scored the first goal of her career in the 60th minute to put SMU up 2-0 and serve as the eventual game winner for the Mustangs. Chancey’s score lifted over the fingers of Baylor’s Ashlee Zirkel into the top of the net. Freshman Nyah Rose recorded her first career assist on the play.

Rose scored SMU’s first goal of the night off an assist from Tori Peterson. Rose bodied the pass before turning and firing past Baylor’s Ashlee Zirkel and into the top left of the net.
Rose’s goal in the 53rd minute marks her fifth goal of the season, upping her goal-per-game average to 1.

Graduate Senior Samantha Estrada tallied three saves in 90 minutes to help lead the Mustangs over the Bears. Estrada now totals 25 saves through five games for the season.

SMU’s win boosted the Mustangs to a 3-2 season record and 2-1 record in its three-game road trip. Freshman Truth Byars played 38 minutes in her career debut for the Mustangs. Sophomore Tori Peterson played 80 minutes in her first start of the season.

SMU and Baylor tied in shots taken (12). The Mustangs bested in the Bears in shots-on-goal 7-4.

Thursday’s match marked the 19th time the Mustangs allowed one or fewer goals in Nicole Nelson’s 24 matches as SMU’s head coach.

SMU returns to the Hilltop on Sunday to face Oklahoma State in its final non-conference matchup of the season. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and can be live streamed via ESPN+.
