Mustangs Fall 2-1 At No. 12 Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (SMU) – Mayu Inokawa scored in the 65th minute as SMU women's soccer fell 2-1 at No. 12 Memphis at the Billy J. Murphy Soccer Complex on Thursday.

Inokawa's penalty-kick goal in the 65th minute closed the scoring gap 2-1. Inokawa's goal marks the second of her career after scoring her first in SMU's 6-3 win over Rice on Sept. 14 – also off a penalty kick. It was just the fifth goal scored against Memphis (9-1, 3-0 AAC) this season, who entered the game 13th in the NCAA in goals against average.

Samantha Estrada tallied seven saves for the Mustangs on the night. The El Paso, Texas, native boosted her season save total to 39 in a 90-minute effort. Estrada currently holds a 4.88 saves per match average, and ranked third in the AAC entering the match.

Inokawa joins Nyah Rose (7), Eliana Salama (2) and Leah Chancey (2) as SMU's multiple-goal scorers on the season. Inokawa, Rose and Mackenzie Rudden all posted shots on goal for the Mustangs.

Memphis's Mya Jones scored both Tiger goals early in the first half (11th, 14th).

The Mustangs responded to Memphis's early lead by setting up five shots before Inokawa's penalty-kick goal, including two shots on goal by Salama and Rose in a two-minute stretch to kick off the second half (52nd-54th).

Thursday's match moves the SMU to 5-3-1 on the season and 1-1-1 in conference play.

SMU returns to the Hilltop to host on UTSA at Washburne Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 5. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and can be livestreamed on ESPN+.
