No. 6 SMU Shuts Out FAU, 3-0, With Three Goals From Two Mustangs

Box Score

DALLAS (SMU) – No. 6 SMU earned its sixth shutout of the season, and remained undefeated in the American Athletic Conference, with a 3-0 win over Florida Atlantic.

The Mustangs got two goals scored from freshman Niv Berkovitz and one from leading scorer Jelldrik Dallmann in the victory at Washburne Stadium on Saturday.

"It was a good game, we played well," head coach Kevin Hudson said. "It was a good performance and to score three goals, and we had several other really good chances. Going into the second half, you can either attack success, or you can try to hold on and protect what you have. And we said, we're going to attack"

Berkovitz scored his third goal of the season in the 12th minute, off of an assist from top assist-man Bailey Sparks, who has five this season. Berkovitz went on to score another for SMU (9-1-2, 4-0-1 AAC) in the bottom right corner of the net off of an assist from defender Kyran Pinho.

"We try to look only on ourselves and try to move from game to game, not looking too far in advance," Berkovitz said. "And I think that's why we like performing so well. We don't need to look at others — if we will do our thing. I know we're gonna get that trophy."

Another Mustang logged a goal against FAU (3-6-3, 2-4-0 AAC), with Hermann Trophy Watch List member Jelldrik Dallmann logging his AAC-leading tenth goal of the season. He was assisted by senior Harvey Castro, with Dallmann going on to score after winning a one-on-one versus FAU's Rotem Fadida in goal.

Starting in goal for the Mustangs was Cole Johnson, a three-time AAC Goalkeeper of the Week, who played 81 minutes, logging one save. Sophomore goalkeeper Martin Dominguez played the remaining nine minutes and secured the shutout.

By the end of the second half, the Mustangs had the opportunity to play 24 players in tonight's game in front of a crowd of about 1,200.

"To all the clubs and fans and campers and everybody else who came out tonight — the big group of alums — that's awesome," Hudson said. "Those are important to us. We have a crowd like that and providing the momentum and energy, it can really boost the team. Hats off to the community here around Dallas and the clubs and the alums for providing that energy and that extra motivation."

Up next, SMU takes on Tulsa on Saturday, Oct. 21. Kickoff is slated for 6:00 p.m. CST and the game will be livestreamed on ESPN+.
