Valentina Becerra Sets New Absolute National Colombian Record In 100 Fly

SANTIAGO, Chile (SMU) — SMU women's swimmer Valentina Becerra most recently participated in the 2023 Pan American Games — setting a new absolute record for Colombia in the 100 meters fly.

The 2023 Pan American Games span from Fri, Oct 20, 2023 – Sun, Nov 5, 2023, with swimming competition taking place from Saturday, Oct. 21 – Wednesday, Oct. 25. Becerra was selected as one of five women representing the South American country of Colombia.

Becerra has started strong, becoming the second fastest Latin American woman ever in the 100 meters fly, in addition to setting Colombia's new absolute record with her time of 59.21 in a fourth place finish.

Going into the games, the Bucaramanga, Colombia native had already reached NCAA B-Standards in the 100 meters fly in both 2022 and 2023, as well as earning All-Conference honors in the event also in 2022 and 2023.

Becerra also finished sixth in the 4x100 medley relay, with a combined time of 3:58.46. In addition, she participated in the 4x100 free relay, touching the wall with her teammates in a combined time of 3:48.21.

Becerra will be back in action for the Mustangs' next competition: the annual SMU Invite Nov. 16-18.

Delighted to see Valentina's progress in a major meet. Pan American Games are important to the Western Hemisphere countries. 8)
