Mustangs Advance To AAC Semifinals With 2-1 Win Over Tulsa

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. (SMU) – Nyah Rose scored two goals to propel SMU past Tulsa 2-1 in the American Athletic Conference Championship's quarterfinal match on Tuesday.

The Mustangs improve to 10-5-1 on the season, with Tulsa finishing 5-9-5 on the year.

Rose, who was selected to the All-AAC First Team and was named AAC Co-Rookie of the Year, scored her first goal in the 54th minute off an assist from Kaya Lee. Rose scored once more in the 71st minute, marking her 11th goal and third multi-goal match of the season.

Rose's 11 goals now mark the sixth most in a season by an SMU freshman and ranks as the second most goals scored by a freshman nationally this season.

SMU is now 10-0-0 when scoring before its opponents this season.

The Mustangs outshot the Golden Hurricane 22-13, marking the seventh consecutive game outshooting opponents. In that stretch, SMU has outshot opponents 104-54. SMU also out-earned Tulsa in corner kick opportunities (8-6).

Rose (2), Lee (2), Wayny Balata (2), Eliana Salama and Sophie King all posted shots on goal for the Mustangs.

SMU allowed only four or fewer shots on goal for the 10th time on Tuesday to continue the Mustangs' impressive defensive streak.

Samantha Estrada tallied two saves in a 90-minute effort, upping her season save total to 57. Estrada now holds 172 career saves, which ranks 10th all-time at SMU.

Mayu Inokawa prevented a goal in the 32nd minute of play, clearing Tulsa's Jordan Fredrick's shot off the line and regaining possession for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs have now allowed one or fewer goals in 28 of 35 matches played under Head Coach Nicole Nelson.

SMU returns to AAC Championship action in Thursday's semifinal match with the winner of No. 2 seed USF and No. 7 seed FAU. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. (CT) and will be available on ESPN+.
