No. 2 SMU Falls to No. 2 Seed Charlotte In AAC Tournament Championship

DALLAS, Texas (SMU) — No. 1 Seed SMU fell 2-1 in a hard-fought match against No. 2 Seed Charlotte in the American Athletic Conference Tournament final.

"It has been over two months since we have felt this feeling," head coach Kevin Hudson said. "It's not easy but we will bounce back."

Charlotte struck first with a goal from defender Ian Pilcher in the 22nd minute.

The Mustangs answered back quickly, with Hermann Trophy watch list member Jelldrik Dallmann converting a penalty kick just three minutes later.

The Mustangs had 15 shot attempts, with seven on goal. Senior goalkeeper Cole Johnson started and played the entirety of the matchup, logging four saves.

After halftime, the final goal of the match was scored by Charlotte's (12-3-1, 6-2-0 AAC) Brandon Morales in the 54th minute.

Top Drawer Soccer places the Mustangs as the No. 1 team in the country, with College Soccer News ranking them No. 4. Currently, SMU also holds the No. 4 spot in the NCAA RPI.

Over 2,000 fans were in attendance for the Sunday afternoon game, one of Washburne's larger crowds in reported history.

A shame to lose that game.

SMU still gets a 6 seed in the dance and will play the winner of Denver/LIU on November 19th.
