Head Coach Ozzie Quevedo Signs Five in First Recruiting Class with SMU

DALLAS, Texas (SMU) — SMU first-year head coach Ozzie Quevedo signed five athletes to add to his roster for the 2024-25 season, completing his first full class for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs were voted in a tie for second place in the 2023-24 American Athletic Conference Preseason Poll. SMU received one first-place vote in the poll among the league's head coaches.

So far this season, the Mustangs logged 217 points in the annual SMU Classic and defeated IWU and OCU in their first regular meet of the season, posting 214 points.

Most recently, SMU is coming off of a second place finish at the annual SMU Invite. The Mustangs finished with 695.50 points, coming in behind No. 19 Miami.

Below is a brief introduction of each incoming signee and/or transfer for the 2024 roster:

Teia Salvino - Incoming Freshman | San Clemente, Calif. | Abeka Academy

Salvino comes to the Hilltop as a two-time CIF and State Champion. She has set two national age group records and was on the Philippine National Team for the 2023 SEA and Asian Games. For SMU, she will be specializing in the freestyle, backstroke and IM.

"Teia brings a lot of international experience, high level racing and versatility to the Hilltop," Quevedo said. "She fits right into our vision and I knew since day one that she belongs here as we continue to build a new era for SMU."

CJ Kovac - Graduate Student | Fort Collins, Colo. | University of Missouri

Kovac comes to the Hilltop following her time with the University of Missouri during her undergraduate years. Here, Kovac was an SEC Academic All-American and team captain. She was also the team captain and state champion while at Fossil Ridge High School.

"CJ comes from the SEC and knows how to race at the highest level," Quevedo said. "She will; add more depth to our middle distance group as we continue to build into the championship season. Welcome to SMU, CJ!"

Isabella Bedoya - Incoming Freshman | Manizales, Colombia | Santa Ines School

Bedoya comes from a family of swimmers, with her brother also currently a swimmer. While at the Santa Ines School, she was named the Most Valuable Athlete of the Year in 2022. In the Caldas Swimming League, she held the best technical record in the Youth A Ladies National Championship — Interclubs, Cúcuta 2021 — as well as the best technical record in the Youth B Ladies Pacific Cup — Bolivia 2022. She swam as a member of the Colombian International Swimming team and has been to multiple international meets throughout South and Central America as well as junior world championships.

"Isa is a Colombian National Team member, has plenty of experience internationally and will bring a lot of speed to our team," Quevedo said. "She is phenomenal in relays, thrives under pressure, wants to win and believes in our philosophy. Welcome to SMU, Isabella!"

Summer Osborne - Incoming Freshman | Auckland, New Zealand | Rangitoto College

Osborne hails to the Hilltop as the reigning Rangitoto College Senior Girls Swimming Champion, which she also won in 2022. She also holds the title of Rangitoto College Sportswoman of the Year. The former water polo player also helped her school win the top Co-Ed title at New Zealand National Secondary Schools Swimming Championships for the past 4 years (2020-2023). For club swimming, she also swam for the North Shore Swimming Club. Here, she won the NSS Coaches' Incentive Female — the swimmer from top squad demonstrating diligence in training and special approach to performance, as well as the Anthony Kattan award — for the top performance at National Age Group Championships. For North Shore, she had the top times in the free, fly time and back.

"Summer is a high level international student athlete with experience at World Juniors and World Championships," Quevedo said. "As part of the New Zealand National Team she will bring massive leadership and we can't wait for her to join us next fall. Welcome to SMU, Summer!

Isabella Krantzcke - Incoming Sophomore | The Woodlands, Texas | Arizona State University

Krantzcke comes to the Mustangs after one year at Arizona State University. Prior to collegiate swimming, she swam at the Woodlands Christian Academy and lettered all four years. Here, she was a four-time first-team all state selection, a five-time TAPPS state record holder and an eight-time TAPPS state champion. She also swam for the Houston Bridge Bats under coach Dirk Marshall.

"Izzy is a wonderful addition to our roster," Quevedo said. "She is not afraid of hard work and will give everything for the team. She will add more depth to our breastroke and IM groups. Welcome to Dallas, Izzy!"

The Mustangs 2023-24 season is already underway, with SMU hosting UNT, Tulane and Rice the weekend of Friday, Jan. 19 to kick off the spring portion of their schedule.

It is hard to understand the upside of these Women Swimmers without times and/or specific events they are best qualified for. I hope there is added strength and depth, abet it can't be know by these announcements.

Here is a quick breakdown of the women's swimming recruits:
Teia Salvino - 50 free: 22.0, 100 free: 49.3, 200 free: 1:47.6, 100 back 53.3, 100 fly 53.67, 200 IM 1:59.1 -, has also been 1:01.8 100 meter back. The best American girl SMU has recruited in 30 plus years, has improved quite a bit in the last couple of years.
Summer Osborne (New Zealand) - 100 free (LC) - 56.7, 200 free: 2:00.99, 400 free: 4:21 , all LC; has been on the NZ 800 free relay at World Championship.
Isabella Bedoya: (Colombia) - LC - 50 free: 26.1, 100 free 56.1
Transfers:
Isabella Krantzcke - transfer from Arizona state, will have 3 years. 1:01/2:13 breast, 2:00 200 IM
CJ Kovac - Grad Transfer from Missouri - 55/1:58 back, 2:00 - 200 IM

The 3 incoming freshman will totally change the team (and I am sure there will be more to come). With those 3, SMU should be able to get all 5 relays to NCAA's.
Things are looking up!

Thanks PonySwim. This is exactly what I wanted to learn. And these recruits and their prior performances exceeded my expectations. Seeing their times (including Long Course Meters) is most helpful and suggests they all have major upside. Much appreciated.
