Dec 8

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (SMU/United Soccer Coaches) – Mads Westergren was named a First Team All-American, United Soccer Coaches announced on Friday. Teammates Cole Johnson, Jelldrik Dallmann and Bailey Sparks each also received Second Team All-American honors.

The four Mustangs put SMU with 49 players to earn All-America honors.

Westergren adds the postseason award to his impressive list of accolades. He was named a First Team All-East Region selection and was announced as a MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist — the most coveted individual honor in NCAA Division I soccer. Westergren concluded his junior season anchoring the backline to become the top ranked defense in the conference. He also received the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year Award.

Additionally, the Solroed Strand, Denmark native was selected to the All-AAC First Team and received an invitation to the 2023 adidas MLS College Showcase.

Dallmann was also recently announced as a MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist. He concluded his season tied in leading the AAC and seventh nationally in goals scored with 14, in addition to logging five assists. Dallmann was a unanimous All-AAC First Team selection and a preseason All-American. The Germany native was listed on the Hermann Trophy Watch List throughout the season and won three AAC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Johnson earned the American Athletic Conference Goalkeeper of the Year after recording 46 saves and eight shutouts in his senior season. Johnson also earned AAC Goalkeeper of the Week four times, three of which were earned consecutively.

Sparks concluded his junior season tied for third in the AAC in assists with five, all of which were scored in different games throughout the season. The Plano native logged the first goal of the Mustangs' 2023 NCAA Tournament run with a header against Denver.

For their efforts, Dallmann, Johnson and Sparks were named Second Team All-American selections.

These four players led the Mustangs to a 14-3-2 record and an American Athletic Conference regular-season title. SMU earned the No. 6 seed in the NCAA Championship and advanced to the Round of 16.
