Mustangs Finish Weekend With 4-3 Win Over Texas Tech

LOS ANGELES (SMU) – The SMU men's tennis team defeated Texas Tech 4-3 in a back-and-forth match at the David X. Marks Tennis Complex on Sunday.

"Huge win on a big stage," said Head Coach Grant Chen. "We had two unbelievable matches this weekend, both with thin margins. To bounce back after USC in less than 17 hours of recovery shows the resilience of this group. We will continue to work and focus on doubles this week. Nine players suited up this weekend, which shows the great depth we have. Great win today by the 'Stangs."

With the win, SMU improves to 5-2 on the season and finished 1-1 at the USC Regional of the ITA Kickoff Weekend.

Sunday's win included a total of four lead changes throughout the afternoon.

With the score tied 3-3, senior Liam Krall defeated Texas Tech's Niksa Arsic 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 to clinch the Mustangs' win.

Huntley Allen and Maks Silagy teamed up on court three, defeating Texas Tech's Takeyaso Sekiguchi and Olle Wallin (6-3) to tie doubles action at 1-1. Texas Tech would then clinch doubles on court two to secure the doubles team point.

Jerry Barton kicked off SMU's scoring in his 6-1, 6-3 win over Jonas Gundacker. Barton's win marked his second victory in straight sets on the weekend.

Louis Cloud earned the Mustangs' second singles point, defeating Sekiguchi in straight sets (6-1, 6-4). Cloud's win gave SMU its first lead of the afternoon (2-1).

Silagy came away victorious in his 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 win over Piotr Pawlak, re-gaining the lead for SMU with a score of 3-2.
