No. 3 SMU Takes Down No. 1 TCU On Senior Day

Story LinksDALLAS (SMU) – The No. 3 SMU equestrian team defeated No. 1 TCU 11-7 on senior day to complete an undefeated home season at the Dallas Equestrian Center on Friday.

"It was a great day to honor our seniors and graduate students by beating an undefeated TCU team," said Head Coach Carol Gwin. "It was great to win all four events, and the icing on the cake was winning all four MOPs. I want to shout out Coach Brad Kearns and Coach Laura Persons for their dedication and having the girls very well-prepared."

The Mustangs improve to 9-4 on the season, with TCU falling to 12-1. SMU has now won 12 consecutive home meets.

Four Mustangs – Hensley Humphries (Flat), Nya Kearns (Horsemanship), Augusta Iwasaki (Fences) and Dani Latimer (Reining) – all earned Most Outstanding Performer (MOP) to sweep the meet's awards.

The meet started with Flat and Horsemanship occurring simultaneously, with SMU taking both events.

Katy Merchant scored first for SMU, posting a 76-71 win over TCU's Sydney Berube. Humphries followed her MOP performance on the next ride, defeating Ashleigh Scully, 83-82. Augusta Iwasaki closed out competition on the Flat an event-clinching 83-66 win against Ella Bostwick.

The Mustangs took the Horsemanship event as well, with Lily Anderson posting a 76.5-73.5 victory over Payton Boutelle to score first for SMU. Jayna Lagace also scored, defeating Giorgia Meadows 76-73.5. Kearns earned her 20th career MOP with a 79-77.5 win against Jessica McAllister to secure the event victory for the Mustangs.

SMU entered the half with a 6-4 lead.

The second half of the meet saw Fences and Reining coincide.

SMU tied with TCU at two points apiece in the Fences event. Taylor Madden posted an 87-85 win against TCU's Ashleigh Scully, and Iwasaki earned her second win of the day in an 89-71 victory over Sydney Berube.

The Mustangs secured the win by scoring three points in the Reining event. Shelby Clausen defeated TCU's Jessica McAllister 72-71 to put SMU up 9-6. Taylor Zimmerman clinched the Mustangs' victory with her 72-70.5 win over Mattie Dukes. Latimer then went on to earn her MOP with a 72-57 win against Giorgia Meadows.

SMU honored 8 seniors (Katherine Delagarza, Shelby Clausen, Katy Merchant, Chalyce Head, Hailey Johns, Nya Kearns, Taylor Madden and Macie Soderquist) and 4 graduate students (Lily Anderson, Dani Latimer, Caroline Nielson and Taylor Zimmerman) after Friday's victory.

Very nice win! Especially nice beating TCU! 8)
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
