No. 58 Mustangs Beat Cal 5-2

DALLAS (SMU) – The No. 58 SMU men's tennis team defeated Cal 5-2 at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex on Sunday.

"Today was a great team win," said Head Coach Grant Chen. "We have talked about playing with tremendous amounts of positive energy and the guys brought it today. We were very productive with a solid doubles point and carried the momentum into singles. We are all excited for three more home matches this week."

SMU improves to 10-6 on season with a 7-1 home mark.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 1-0 lead over the Golden Bears by securing the doubles team point.

Maks Silagy and Julian Steinhausen teamed up to take court three against Cal's Qian Sun and John Kim (6-3). The No. 44 duo of Adam Neff and Huntley Allen clinched the doubles point soon after, defeating Carl Emil Overbeck Jr. and Mikey Wright on court one (6-3).

Neff and Allen's victory marked the squad's fourth of the season.

Liam Krall earned SMU's first singles victory of the day. The senior claimed court four over Cal's Johnathan Irwanto in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) to extend the Mustangs' lead to 2-0.

Next, Neff defeated No. 67 Ryder Jackson on court two (6-4, 6-0) to put SMU within one point of clinching the match.

Jerry Barton sealed the Mustangs' victory, beating John Kim (6-2, 6-2) to secure the SMU win and take a 4-0 lead.

Freshman Trevor Svajda earned his 11th win of the year against Cal's No. 107 Carl Emil Overbeck (6-3, 7-5). Svajda's win versus Overbeck marked his third victory over a ranked opponent.

SMU returns to the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex on Wednesday for a dual match with Butler. Wednesday's match is set to begin at 1 p.m. (CT).
