Hoagland, Kovac Earn All-America Honors At NCAA Championship

INDIANAPOLIS (SMU) – Night two of the NCAA Championship saw SMU Men's Swimming and Diving graduate students Jack Hoagland and Danny Kovac capture All-America honors for their stellar performances in the 500 Free and 200 IM.

Hoagland opened up the evening posting a time of 4:12.65 in the championship final, good for sixth place in the event. Arizona State's Leon Marchand won gold with an NCAA record time 4:02.31.

The Albuquerque, N.M. native earned All-America honors with the sixth-place finish, becoming the first Mustang to earn honors in the event since Matt Barager and Chad Hundeby in 1991.

In the consolation final of 200 IM, Kovac turned on the jets, breaking his own record from the trial session in the morning, winning the consolation final at 1:41.41. The graduate student notched All-America Honorable Mention honors, the first SMU swimmer to earn honors in the event since Tim Carlson in 2002.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT RELAY FINALS
The 800 Free Relay team of Jack Hoagland, Chris Mykkanen, Jack Forrest and Colin Feehery finished 15th on day one of the NCAA Championship on Wednesday at the IU Natatorium.

The team finished with a time of 6:14.35 in the second timed final, setting a new program record. The 15th-place finish gave the team All-America Honorable Mention honors for the event.

The Mustangs scored four points for the finish, the first time they have scored at the NCAA Championship since 2013.

Future Atlantic Coast Conference foe Cal took first in the event with an NCAA-record time of 6:02.26.

Hoagland opened things up for SMU with of 1:32.47 going out, shattering his previous program record he had in the 200 free.

Mykkanen followed with a time of 1:33.92.

Forrest, in the third spot, posted a time of 1:33.52.

Feehery closed it out for SMU, going 1:34.44 for the final 200 yards.
