Mustangs Win AAC Championship in Back-to-Back Years, Clinch NCAA Tournament Bid

DALLAS — SMU Women's Tennis won its second straight American Athletic Conference Championship, defeating Memphis 4-0 on Sunday at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex.

SMU (13-11) earned the top seed going into the Championship, with Memphis (17-8) being the No. 3 seed.

"I feel incredibly proud of the team," head coach Jeff Nevolo said. "We battled through a lot of adversity this year. We were able to play our best tennis on the last day of the tournament which is what you always aim for."

The Mustangs secured the first point of the match by winning doubles play. Maja Makoric and Millie Skelton paired for the fifth time this year, defeating Alice Amendola and Miriam Grosmann to clinch the point for the Mustangs in a 7-6 (13-11) tiebreaker.

Hadley Doyle and Drew Morris partnered to take down Memphis's Emily Meyer and Leonie Moeller — 6-3. This is the second time this season Doyle and Morris defeated the pair, also earning a win over them on Senior Day on April 15th.

In singles play, Lana Mavor, Makoric and Doyle all swept their matches in two sets to secure the win for the Mustangs.

Mavor, a Maine native, defeated Meyer, 6-1, 6-4.

Makoric finished next — Amendola fell to the senior 6-1, 6-3.

On court three, Doyle clinched the title for SMU with her 6-3, 6-3 set wins over Monique Woog.
