Kent Hunter Named Assistant Men's Tennis Coach

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU men's tennis team added Kent Hunter as an assistant coach, Head Coach Grant Chen announced on Thursday.

"We are eager to announce that Kent Hunter will be joining our coaching staff for the 2024-25 season," said Chen. "He has been successful at every level as a player and brings a great perspective to the team. Kent's qualities and character align with the team and I know he will make a strong impact on our program. We have found our guy and are excited to have a complete coaching staff."

Hunter grew up playing tennis in Compton, Ca. and would go on to compete at the highest levels of collegiate tennis. Beginning his college tennis career at a junior college in California, Hunter became one of the best players in junior college losing only one match in singles and doubles before transferring to Cal.

While at Cal, Hunter was named one of the best college tennis players from Southern California making the USTA All-College Team. Finally, he ended his college tennis career at LSU and was awarded All-SEC honors in both singles and doubles during his final year of college tennis.

Hunter is also an accomplished pickleball player and coach, competing in multiple professional pickleball tournaments around the country while also being a PPR Certified pickleball instructor.
